I booked an overnight stay at the Horseshoe bay Motel with my family in July, given that we had an early morning sailing booked the following morning to Nanaimo BC.
Having read reports on the internet I was drawn to the reviews which mentioned the friendly, homely atmosphere and was not disappointed. I made the booking direct with the hotel, and re-confirmed again prior to leaving the UK at the beginning of July.
Upon arrival at Horseshoe Bay, the hotel was easy to find, and only a block back from the harbour front. We were greeted by the owners who quickly erased any doubts we had over the location and/or its amenities. This Motel is family run, and the accommodations (we had booked Superior rooms) were excellent. Yes this hotel does not have a pool or Gym, but what it does have is oodles of character. Both rooms had old fashioned period decor and furnishings, with a huge homely bed at the heart. The mock fireplaces added to the cosy feel, and the availability of an electric fire was welcome given the inclement weather during our stay. The exterior doors are fitted with anti-lockout handles, which are particularly useful when flitting between adjacent rooms, though we did have to ask "how do we lock the door" before retiring for the night.
The Motel does not provide breakfast, however there are a number of excellent eateries within a couple of minutes, from which you can get sustenance. Service is 'local', and the food likewise prepared and served. I always think that if the 'locals' eat there, then it can't be bad!
So far as 'nightlife' is concerned, the town does shutdown by early evening, but this only serves to ensure a peaceful night's sleep
One point of note, if you are going on the ferry, then allow a little time to get from the hotel to the point of embarkation. Although the ferry is a mere stone's throw from the motel, the drive to the 'Port' takes around 10mins, and involves a horseshoe drive towards the highway and back again before reaching the access gate.
If you are however going to Nanaimo or visaversa, I can highly recommend a stopover at this excellent facility, and many thanks to all for the attention afforded during our stay.
