Three days of perfection!

5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed Sep 11, 2013
Stayed at Discovery Island Lodge for three nights. Kayaking, hiking, swimming. Couldn't have been better. Fabulous breakfasts by Beth. Comfortable beds, stunning views, luminescence in waters. Porpoises, Orcas, eagles and friendly staff. Who could ask for more. I am new to kayaking but was made to feel like an expert. Beth is an astonishing guide, both patient and knowledgeable. I never felt safer or more competent. Wonderful trip.

If you're looking for a lodge from to serve as your base from which to develop your kayak paddling skills, or serve as accommodations for your guided or unguided day trips, or for launching that extended multi-day kayak tour you will not find a more comfortable lodge or beautiful setting, or more capable staff than that at Discovery Island Lodge, and Coast Mtn. Expeditions.

The beautiful lodge is in an idyllic setting, right on the water, perfectly located to explore the beautiful waterways and shorelines of the area, by yourself, with assistance and guidance of their wonderful staff, or with others staying at the lodge. The staff is incredibly knowledgable, pleasant and helpful; capable of assisting families with children or older adults and everyone in between in getting out on the water and back safely. The lodge is rustic yet very comfortable. The rooms, bathrooms, showers, kitchen, and sauna are all kept immaculately clean, functional, and attractively constructed using local wood. Shoes off at the door policy for lodge fits with our own policy at our house. Every room is just steps from a balcony overlooking the water, with all room windows opening out to the shoreline. The solar powered lodge, wonderful propane kitchen stove/oven, and wood fired sauna will meet all of your needs while minimizing your environmental footprint. Pack your dry goods (foods) in a container for carry and storage in the lodge kitchen. You will get your own refrigerated cold storage cubby in the kitchen for unloading your cooler contents but you may want to bring ice.
You'll find large purple starfish, jellyfish and harbor seals just outside your door.
If you're interested in sea kayaking or just hanging out on the water's edge you'd better book your trip to this place. We were there for 2 nights but we left wishing we could have stayed much longer!

Room tip: Ask about rooms on south and east for best water views

The other reviews from August 2013 say it well. My wife and I spent 2 nights here, and enjoyed it a lot. Great staff went out of their way to make the stay special, up to and including a 'private' kayak tour when the group we were intended to join changed their agenda. Access is via a gravel road with some steep inclines and lots of washboard, so batten down the hatches. Well worth the trip!

Room tip: Rooms at the front have the best view. Note all rooms are beneath the common area on the floor above, so don't expect quiet mornings to sleep in late - but then you won't want to miss the great breakfast anyhow!

Discovery Islands Lodge is a former fishing camp that was totally renovated to serve as a lodge, both for kayakers leaving from the premise, daytrippers as well as a stop over for kayakers on their way through the area. The rooms are immaculate, everything is super clean, the views from each room fantastic. The bathrooms are shared and the kitchen and common area is above the rooms, so do not expect to sleep in here. The staff treated us like family, actually better. The breakfast was home cooked and wonderful. We stayed the night and did an easy day trip locally. Saw lots of wildlife, the paddling was really easy due to the guides excellent route planning, got a delicious lunch underway. All in all fantastic. It takes a while to get out to the lodge, 45 minutes from the ferry, after making it up 1/2 of Vancouver Island, so at least 2 ferries but it is really worth the trip. Even if you are not kayaking, the lodge is beautifully located, the atmosphere serene and you can see it all from the beautiful deck.

Room tip: There are double rooms and, bunk room, depending on your need for privacy. All rooms are quiet, all face the water. Can't go wrong here.

We stayed two nights here and were sorry to have to come home. A fairly easy drive from Vancouver Island, the lodge is off the grid and looks out into wilderness. Solar power runs the lodge but it is part of the experience and no hardship for the guests. Staff are friendly and knowledgeable, and provide excellent breakfasts each morning. They also provide guided day-trips or multi-day trips, for a variety of skill levels. You can also go hiking, hang around the lodge and read, take a traditional sauna on the deck or explore the incredible variety of marine life attached to and around the dock area! In the two days we were there people witnessed orca whales, otters, murrelets, nudibranchs, sea cucumbers, a variety of sea stars, kelp crabs, urchins, and more all without leaving the dock! We'll be going back here for sure!

I agree with the other positive comments posted. This wilderness experience was truly magical for us. We spent 2 days there in early September. The 3 staff members we met were helpful and friendly. Our breakfasts were nutritious and delicious. We enjoyed spending some evening time with the other guests. As a bonus a humpback whale came right past the lodge on the day we arrived....wonderful!

Room tip: We loved the room at the front with a double bed. Many other rooms have single beds.
