We were lucky enough to be part of the 5-day Discovery Islands kayaking expedition that got humpback whales breach really close to us (see the video on their facebook page). This was truly a once in a lifetime experience.
I would have rated the expedition 5 stars even without the whale encounter. It was the best way to enjoy nature in an active way in British Columbia.
Our tour guides (Damon and Julie) were extremely professional, attentive and cooked us some awesome gourmet food (a different item every day including pancakes and eggs Benedict for breakfast, salmon and kabobs for dinner).
They provided us with expert description of the wildlife as well as tips for optimal kayaking.
We started the trip by loading all 10 kayaks. I was amazed at the amount of stuff they can carry. You are given a small and a large (30L) dry bag to fit the belonging you take with you for the entire trip. Next you load the tent, sleeping mat and bag as well as the food, water and supplies needed for 5 days.
You really leave civilization behind. No cell signal or charging station :-).
Each day follows a similar pattern: wake up, eat freshly prepared breakfast, pack up, kayak for 2-3 hours, stop for lunch, kayak for another 2-3 hours, unload kayaks and pitch your tent. Eat a gourmet dinner and enjoy a campfire, go to bed.
I brought some books but ended up having no time to read at all. The group was fun to chat with. We also enjoyed seeing shooting stars from the Perseids.
Each day we got to another location to stop for the night, basically circling Read Island. We stopped on Quadra, Read, Rendezvous, Cortes and Breton Islands.
We saw tons of wildlife up close including, sea stars, anemones, nudibranches, crabs, jellyfish, a spotted ratfish, otters, seals, a sea lion, eagles, white-sided dolphins and humpback whales!
The best way to pack is to bring synthetic clothes that can dry fast for the kayaking part and some cotton to be comfy at the camp.
Recommendation: bring your own alcohol to enjoy for dinner and around the campfire.

4 wonderful days. kayaking, kayaking, stars, scenery so breathtakingly beautiful... the site, at the edge of an Orca reserve, stream running by with delicious fresh water, rocky beach by the Ocean - the luxury yurts are located in the forest.... this is glamping at its best. The guides take care of the packing, lugging, equipment, cooking.... they do the work and you enjoy.

The packing list that they provide is 'spot on' .

If your idea of wildlife interaction is poking an animal with a stick, the circus may be a better bet... or the whale chasers. If, however, you wish to experience wildlife in its own element and observe - the awe, wonder and beauty of this trip will astound you. We saw a humpback on our first day, an otter and black bear on our way to the site. We saw Orcas in the distance, heard them passing in the night and on the third day, up close as they swam across to the reserve. We saw porpoises surrounding the kayaks, a waterfall, the strait and forest enshrouded in a fog one early morning, the ocean as smooth as glass one day and as wavy as the Queen of England another.
I saw an octopus, sea urchins, and star fish.

My husband and I and another couple signed up for Wildcoast's 7 day premium package after checking them out on the internet. We stayed two nights at April Point Resort which was great and the package included a 4 hours wild ride in a zodiac with Campbell River Whale Watching. We did not see whales-they might have been around but the waves were too high but we did see harbour seals, sea lions and some white sided dolphins put on a show you might expect in Marine Land. On the third day we were taken north by boat for a 2 1/2 hour scenic boat ride and along with the other 12 in the group were dropped off at Orca Camp. Aptly names as we arrived with a pod of orcas. We kayaked every day and had great food prepared by the guides AND we saw orcas every day. The tents had cots comfortable for sleeping and the big dining/kitchen tent was a great place to congregate. The guides Bender, Julie and Nova were great-lots of fun. A final night at Gowland Harbour was the perfect ending to a great trip.

We went on the 4 day orca kayaking tour & it was fantastic! We saw 2 orca whales from a distance and were lucky enough to have 2 large pods of dolphins swim right past us, as well as seeing a baby black bear, bald eagles & starfish all up close.
The guides were extremely helpful, friendly, professional & fun. And they cooked us the most delicious food- even gluten free! With spacious tents (permanently set up on platforms), all sleeping gear provided, a hot shower & a sauna, we were extremely happy as glampers (glamorous campers!)

Cannot recommend this tour more highly.

My wife and I plus adult daughter and her boyfriend had an amazing kayak trip in the Discover Islands out of Quadra Island. Damon (who happens to be co-owner) and guide Julie did a great job with our very diverse group of ages, experience levels and nationality. It's not an easy task to do something like that and they kept us happy and well fed. They handled the issues we had with planned campsites being occupied, making our longer than planned days pleasant. Of course one of our detours lead to a lifetime highlight of acrobatic humpback whales, but it was during the olympics. It was a great experience I highly recommend Wildcoast.
