I've been drinking in the Barley Mow on and off for the last fifteen years. The Landlady and Landlord have got it just as they see fit and I can't really fault the place. No music, plastic food or plastic beer, all the ale and cider is drawn straight from the cask. There is a range of good quality bottled soft drinks for drivers. Fentimans, that sort of thing. If you have something wrong with you and can't drink proper ale or cider they do have a lager tap that is hidden behind the counter. Unless things have changed since I last had a sandwich (a year or so ago) there is a choice of garlic sausage, cheese or cheese and pickle. All made to order. Simple but effective! The bar and snug are lovely, decorated simply and without pretension. They open at lunchtime and in the evening. Sadly you can't stay and get mashed all afternoon but in a way that is part of the charm. Go, enjoy it and don't make too many comments about the locals not having the attitude you'd been given to expect from the H.E. Bates novel you'd read.
