Returned for 30 year uni reunion. Pub had not changed at all. Great beer selection and an excellent little beer garden at the back.

A long established and traditional pub in the heart of Kingsdown, it’s very pleasant internally with a proper pub feel to it and a good choice of beers on tap. There is also a decent sized garden at the rear. There always used to be a model train running on a track around the pub, but unfortunately on my last couple of visits this has not been working, despite the track still being there. It’s a shame they don’t get this fixed, it was a nice feature and surely wouldn’t be too much work to get it going again.

The menu offered a decent enough selection of pub staples such as lasagne, burger and so on. It was disappointing that the beef and ale pie had run out, especially since they only started serving food at 5:30 and we were then soon after 6:00. Instead I opted for the fish pie, only to be told five minutes later that this too had run out! The barman said something about head office only allocating them a certain number...? Whatever the reason, it seems to smack of poor management somewhere along the line. Consequently we took our business elsewhere.

It’s a shame as this is a really nice pub and I’d happily stop in again for a drink, but I won’t be rushing back for the food until they get their stock control sorted out.

Proper old fashioned pub of the Dickensian era but genuine, not tarted up. Youngs, the owners, wanted to update it some time back but a successful campaign by the locals stopped this - thank heavens. It does not look much from the outside but inside is a different matter. The pub is long with a beer garden at the back and plenty of nooks an crannies to sit and ponder life. What about the beer I hear you ask? Well you will not be disappointed as there are eight (yes 8) real ales on tap. Our knowledgeable bartender was able to fill us in on the history and we enjoyed his encyclopaedic knowledge of beers and brewing. Definitely worth visit. Oh, and do try the floating lemon game...

Came here in John Robin's recommendation and so glad we did. Completely charming place, great staff, full of character and good ale. Defiantly worth a visit. We enjoyed the 'place a penny on the lemon' and felt very welcome by the staff. Would recommend and will happily return next time in Bristol.
