“Dismal. Avoid”
Reviewed 30 January 2012

If we hadn't been invited by friends (who, in fairness, hadn't been there before), we would have walked out before ordering. Everything about this place was cheap - except the prices. Service was slow, the 'waitress' didn't even know what was on the menu, decor was uninspiring, entrees were particularly expensive (and certainly not worth it), compulsory 10% service charge was unbelievable and, as if to add insult to injury, they don't take cards! Avoid at all costs.

“fallen far - quality had reduced, but prices have risen”
Reviewed 21 January 2012

Once upon a time this restaurant was top of the rankings on trip advisor, and we used to think it was well earned. Yes, it was expensive, but the dishes were fresh, and service was great. Then it moved out from near the grafton out to near Hills road, and the food has gone steadily down hill - yet prices continue to rise.
Now, the food is gluttonous, portions are getting smaller, you pay for EVERYTHING - including £3 for a small glass of flat coke out of a bottle, and £3.50 for a bowl of prawn crackers. The owner, who initially brought her personality and charisma to enhance dining experience, is now completely over the top, interupting peoples dinners to take about her thai chi classes whether they want it or not, and annoyed us by insisting to have a cuddle with our friends 6 month year old - waking him up from his sleep ensuring that we had no peace for the rest of our meal.
The final insult was that when the bill arrived, they had added an extra 2,5% increase on to account for the tax rise from 17,5% to 20%, which everyone with GCSE maths knows that a 17,5% rise followed by a 2,5% rise does NOT equal a 20% rise (but a 20.43% rise)- on our bill (£100+ for 4) this accounted for an additional £4.50 that they scammed out of us!
I'm not surprised to see that its fallen so far from its old top spot.

“Average / OK, it seems expensive ... but large portion sizes ...”
Reviewed 15 January 2012

We arrived here without a booking & The Peking were perfectly accommodating and friendly.

The dishes do seem very expensive compared to other restaurants (£9-90 incl. service charge, for chinese veg - which is literally just a plate of braised pak choi greens for example) but as someone else on here has mentioned, as each main course dish is probably enough for two people you don't need to order that much. In fact the restaurant would probably be better off making the potion sizes smaller and charging less! I'm sure a portion two thirds the size at £6 would seem a far better deal / there would be less complaints about the prices.

That said, as all of the prices and the compulsory 10% service charge on top are very clearly listed on the menu on the wall outside, we couldn't really complain. It is also clearly marked outside that they don't take credit cards - so again it was no surprise that we had to pay cash.

Service was sporadic - there was a lot of looking around trying to catch the eye of a waiter / waitress when we needed anything (and they weren't overly busy) - but when they were available they were very professional / attentive.

So overall I'd say it was OK - not Wow! - but also not awful. The food was fine, but again just OK / nice rather than stunning. Just be careful how much you order or you wil probably end up paying over the top & not eating lots of it because you are full. We enjoyed it, got very full, and came away reasonably happy.

One thing that I think would massively improve the atmosphere? Put some carpet in!! Those cream coloured ceramic tiles on the floor do seem very "cold & unwelcoming" for what, given the pricing, is aiming to be one of the better restaurants.

“Expensive with bad service”
Reviewed 28 December 2011

After hearing great reviews about this restaurant, my partner and I chose to go there to celebrate the start of our Chistmas holidays.

Unfortunately to say our expectations weren't met was an understatement. After being seated, it took an age for a waiter to spot that no one had asked to take our drinks order. Once the drinks were ordered, we looked the food menu which was messy as it had been amended by hand and clearly showed a rise in price. Given the price bracket of this restaurant this was a little unexpected and not the start to the experience you'd want.

The food was good but it's difficult to justify paying double the price of a similar restarant (eg. a side of egg fried rice was £5). For the extra cost you'd expect excellent service which sadly wasn't delivered and within Cambridge there are Chinese restaurants which service food of this restaurant's standard but for a more realistic price and with better service.

Our last problem was they only accepted cash. This was fine for us as we had enough cash with us but for a restaurant with such high prices you would expect them to accept cards.

Overall, we arrived with high expectations but left disappointed and definately will not be going there again.
