“Village of the damned”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 25 October 2011

This 'hotel' has good and bad points - I'll start with the good. We booked thinking it was a glorified B&B so we were pleasantly surprised at the facilities - pool, gym, pool table, large rooms, bar etc. Breakfast buffet had plenty of variety - full English, cereals, toast, jams, porridge. Good location - 5 minute walk into town centre, ample parking at the hotel, and we had room 133 - nice, front end, large room .
Bad points, which do outweigh the good and would stop me staying here again - old, old window in the bedroom which banged in the windowframe all night long, literally didnt get a wink of sleep. Paper thin walls - we had 'great' neighbours who put their telly on full blast at 6.30am, but that wasn't our best wake up call. That status is reserved for one foghorn member of staff who decided to get the Christmas decorations out of the attic above our room at 8.30am while singing and talking at the top of her voice. The guests were also something else - all older, loud 'partiers'. Think your slightly embarrassing Aunt Mable and her 50 fag-hag friends on an extended, cider-fuelled bingo tour dancing the night away to Who the F is Alice?...
Check in is from 2.30pm but when we arrived we were told we had to wait half an hour as the "girls weren't ready", and finally, there were three coaches constantly ticking over outside our window waiting to take Aunt Mable and co off to wherever every morning, and a generator which came on at first light and buzzed all day. Yawn! (October 22-23, 2011)

Room Tip: As if any of the rooms have neww window fittings!

We stayed 17/21 Oct as part of a Ashtons Holiday. Had to change rooms 3 times. first room (208)quite tatty. Windows could not be closed due to handles had been snapped off, second room n(206) was small and grubby. Third room (125) was acceptable althought the toilet seat was wonky and the shower head could not be fitted into its holder making the taking of a shower only possible by holding the shower head with one hand. Food was quite mundane but acceptable. The Reception staff was in the 'End of season mode' and not particulaly helpful although the dining room staff were excellent. The evening entertainment was proof of were artistes go to when they are well past their sell by date. could only reccomend to those on a tight budget.

Room Tip: Always check the room before you unpack.

Went on the 22nd sep with a coach trip, on arrival two children helped the staff with the luggage so we could go straight for are meal as we arrived late. There was a choice of 3 starters, 3 mains, and a lovely selection of desserts. Breakfast was a buffet which the staff filled up as soon as it was getting low. The room me and my partner stay in was nice with a lovely big shower and the bed was comfortable room 112 but we hardly had any sleep with the noise from up stairs tv on all night floor boards creaking. So we ask to be moved the staff was lovely about it and moved us to a quite room 303, we had a low graded room with a pink bathroom suite with a rubber shower attachment room was ok, the bed squeaks so much when you moved i thought the hole of the hotel would here. There was a small swimming pool, a pool table which could do with new cues, a jacuzzi and a sauna, gym which we didnt use. The lounge was nice and big plenty of room to dance, the entertainment was ok the comedian was not that funny at all telling old jokes. Lovely friendy staff at meal times, and the husband and wife behind the bar were lovely helped with are drinks to the table . The sea front is about 10 mins walk and theres a small tesco 5 mins walk from hotel. Would definitely stay again.

We saw the hotel adverised on Travelzoo and as the deal appeared to be very good value for money we decided to give it a go. What a great place.
Room was airy and comfortable with plenty of storage for a family.
The jacuzzi bath was a real hit with the children.
The food was buffet style for breakfast with a very good choice and it was constantly being topped up by the very friendly staff. The 3 course evening meal was again good and changed every night although the children were spolt with a further choice of 3 meals if they did not like one of the 3 main meal options on offer each evening - so they had 6 to choose from.
Overall a very relaxing stay at a family friendly hotel.
We would definitely stay again.

Room Tip: Look at Travelzoo for offers

Dreadful room, it is one thing being dated (70's) but a room or hotel does not have to be dirty. Our room (216) was grubby, smelly and depressing. It is hard to believe a hotel can provide such awful accommodation. Every part of the hotel we say was grim and worst of all we paid a fortune (albeit a very late booking on a bank holiday). Had we paid £30 then we would have got what we paid for, but to get this from £84 is a joke. Stay away from this hotel please.... Unless, like us, you have a sense of humour and want to experience something like a down market Fawlty Towers or Monty Python sketch! Seriously, stay away, it is an absolute disgrace and an insult to any guest.

Decided to go last minute, as we got a deal for £99 per person for 3 nights, bed, breakfast and dinner! Price was so low, we really weren't expecting much, but we were pleasantly surprised. Yes, the rooms were small and the the decoration dated, but the location is great, 100m from the path to the beach cove, and half mile from the main high street. The food was also very good. Breakfast buffet (cooked breakfast, cereals, yogurt etc), and for the evening meal, a choice of 2 starters, 3 main meals and a dessert buffet. The meals were basic (fish or meat and veg), but very tasty. And the dessert buffet rivaled that of most restaurants. But it was the staff who made the difference. From the first phone call, through reception, wait staff, maids and through to final day checkout, they were consistently helpful, friendly and pleasant. 70% of the guests while we were there were pensioners, the rest families or surfers. If you go in expecting cheap and cheerful, you won't be disappointed, and you will enjoy your stay. Just remember it's a 2 star, set your expectations accordingly, and you should have a blast!

Room Tip: We had to book a twin as no doubles available. But when we checked in they have switched us to a dou...

We travelled with our local coach Company (Harry Shaw) 8th to 12th Aug, a great week with good sunny weather until the last day!!
We had a ground floor room, which was one of the two houses which is part of main Hotel now, we had the one with S/E facing view, with the early Sun streaming in. The odd point was the wash basin in the room! the bathroom had the bath with shower and W/C. Plenty storage space in the room was quite spaceous and clean - no problems there. Can't say anything about the other rooms, some could be better or worse, depends were you are put. Found the pillows were a touch hard, if you dropped one it went with THUD... good door stop.. LOL..
Food was very good, breakfasts are help yourself, so you could tank yourself for the day with a snack at lunchtime..Evening meals are served piping hot, with choices of starters, main meal, and desserts, or you can have the help yourself desserts - at least 12 choices!! if not full - have more. There were some Gannets!!
Other guests who said they have been here few times - one family has been here for 4 years - so can't be too bad then!!
Hotel has a Swimming pool (small), Gym, Jacuzzi and (Sauna-Chargeable). There is a safe childrens play area, and for smokers, there is a covered area with chairs.
If you want a packed lunch for day of departure they are £4, (Better Motorway prices), choice of sandwiches, biscuits, cake and juice, very good value... Order the day before..
There is a large carpark, and can take 2 coaches.

Yes.. we will be back...
