Our train from Paddington to Penzance arrived too late to make the last flight of the day out to the Isles of Scilly from Lands End airport so we decided to stay the night in Penzance and get a flight the foillowing day.
The Estoril hotel was child friendly and the rates seemed reasonable and it was not too far to walk from the railway station. It took about 25 minutes going mostly uphill through the town centre, although you can also go via the seafront which is slightly longer, but less of a climb. We did not mind the walk as we had spent most of the day sitting on trains. It would only be a few pounds in a taxi if carrying heavy cases.
We arrived at the hotel just in time to make the 2000 hours check-in cut-off time and were met by a very friendly lady. The room key also acts as the front door key which is locked soon after check-in closes.
We were shown our rooms, one on the first floor and ours up another flight of steep stairs in the attic area, although it was larger.
We then went into town for dinner and it's only a short walk to The Tremenheere Wetherspoons for all the usual pub favourites.
After a very restfull nights sleep, we went down for the buffet breakfast and were shown to a table in the conservatory which was very pleasant. The fruit bowl was especially tasty, with the usual fried options available in heated trays. Tea and coffee is from a machine and the beakfast area is quite cramped which is the only reason this hotel does not get an excellent rating.
We were able to leave our bags in the dining room while exploring the town and left 30 minutes to get back to the staiton to meet the airport minibus. This proved to be just the right amount of time.
We would be happy to stay at this hotel again for any future stop overs in Penzance.

Room Tip: The rooms on the top floor are larger, but the stairs are very steep.

The hotel is beautiful outside and inside. So flowery - like from fairytale ;) Very friendly and helpful staff. Room and bathroom spacious and clean. Tasty, diversified breakfast. Hotel is placed in nice area, close to the sea and city centre. Highly recommend! :)

It wouldn't really have been a memorable experience at all, if it weren't for the extraordinary owner. He is a reincarnation of Basil Fawlty with unnerving aspects of Norman Bates. He will argue with you over booking details and be so insistent upon having the last word that you will need to walk away. He will not help you with luggage but he will point out that you have no business with a case you can't manage alone. He will not tell you your room number but will remind you that you have already been given your key (and, therefore, can check for yourself). The door will be locked after 8.00pm and if you make the mistake of ringing the bell, he will remind you that guests are expected to be quiet after this time - even if you are quietly entering the residence at 9.15 and are alone! I couldn't get away fast enough. I will not be returning.

Very good location, close to to the open air pool, newlyn and the harbours. Very welcoming and the breakfast was great, large selection of good quality food including hot and cold.
Our room was very large and had everything you needed, we were a family and all stayed in one room without feeling cramped.

Parking can be a pain if you have a larger car and also in the evening as the road while we were there was very busy so no spaces at all, but parking by the yacht pub is good and free for 3 hrs during the day.

The Estoril feels more like a guesthouse or B&B than a hotel, and that is a compliment! The owners work hard to make sure all their guests have a great time. Very friendly atmosphere, very personal staff. Clean, tidy rooms. Lovely place!.
