“Outstanding Accommodation, Lovely People & Beautiful Location ...”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 29 March 2012

The Charterhouse provides the best environment to relax, enjoy some natural beauty on your doorstep (Torquay Seafront, Cockington Village) all whilst feeling in the comfort of your own home.

Put simply, I stayed at Charterhouse Hotel in Mar./2012 and didn't want to leave.

From the minute of arriving, Marion and Les were charming hosts. From the lovely warm welcome, to the breakfast discussions (which often involved fellow guests) and whilst enjoying a drink in Boots & Laces with Les, it was a pleasure to be in the hands of such a delightful couple.

I travelled from Tokyo to visit family in Torquay, and having made the trip on numerous occasions in the past, seldom can I remember such a good night sleep on arrival. The beds are incredibly comfortable, the rooms are well decorated and the surrounding environment outside is quiet and safe.

Breakfast was another highlight. The food quality is excellent, the variation on offer is broad and the atmosphere makes a good start to your day. I recommend trying the home-made Marmalade.

Many good hotels get an 'excellent' rating, which makes it difficult to establish a crème-de-la-crème of hotels. In this case, The Charterhouse Hotel is a superb hotel of the highest quality which guarantees you will not fail in enjoying at least one aspect of your holiday.

It's a shame the weather doesn’t come with the same guarantee ;-)

Chris.

We stayed at the hotel for a weekend in March. We were visiting Torquay and I was looking for a dog friendly B&B. I spent a lot of time looking on the Internet for somewhere that looked nice for us to stay and would also be good for our Springer Spaniel Mille.
The Charterhouse really did tick all the boxes. We stayed in the smaller of the garden rooms which was ample in size, the flooring is laminate which really took the pressure off us having to worry when Mille's feet were muddy. Having your own entrance is great for letting them in and out without disturbing any other guests. The room was extremely clean and nicely decorated.

The hotel is very close to the water meadow which was great for the dog and takes you straight into the thatched village, which has a dog friendly pub. In the opposite direction was the sea front with dog friendly beaches. We got a lot of pleasure from seeing what a great time Mille was having. If you are visiting with a dog that is anything like Mille (loves mud and water) I would suggest taking a dog towel with you, we took ours and was glad we did.

All the positive reviews about Marion and Les and their breakfasts are true.

I'm sure we will return to Devon and when we do, we will certainly be staying here again.

Thank you for your lovely review and we are really pleased that you all enjoyed your stay with us here at The Charterhouse. Yes, we are in a fabulous location, being so close to the Water Meadows leading straight to Cockington Country Park - ideal for amblers and dog walkers alike and just along from Livermead Beach – dog friendly all year round. We are happy to offer two garden rooms in which we allow a small pet dog and both of these rooms have their own separate entrance so that guests may come and go with their pet without disturbing our other guests. We do not allow dogs in any of the other guest bedrooms or in the main building.
Our large Family Garden Room is in the process of a complete refurbishment and we very much look forward to welcoming new guests into it shortly.

We arrived to a very warm welcome and were able to immediately relax after our journey with a tray of tea and biscuits, whilst our cases were taken from our car to our room..
Our room was immaculate, spacious and comfortable with nice views.
Marion and Les were a lovely couple, always on hand to offer advice on local amenities and recommended the best of local restaurants, and they take pride in providing a really full English Breakfast of home made and locally produced products.
Charterhouse enjoys a peaceful location only a few minutes from the sea and within easy reach of the town centre.
We have travelled the world and have no hesitation in recommending Marion, Les and their Charterhouse as the best!

We had a wonderful three night stay at this hotel. Could not fault this hotel everything was perfect. Marion and Les are warm and friendly, simply the best hosts, full of recommendations and nothing was too much trouble for them. The room was perfect, lovely views and the breakfast was out of this world, best hotel breakfast we've ever had, big full english, lots of choice, homemade bread and marmalade (awaiting recipes Les!) Having stayed at such a wonderful hotel and made to feel at home made our gettaway break simply wonderful. If we are back in Torquay again I wouldn't stay anywhere else.

This was our second stay at the Charterhouse, the reason for our return was the lovely clean peaceful rooms coupled with such a genuinely warm welcome from Marion and Les for whom nothing is too much trouble. The breakfasts are plentyful and varied and Les's home made breads and marmalades are worth the 5 hour journey alone. Stayed in the top floor family room on this occasion which has been recently decorated, looks lovely and has both a large bath and a new power shower with settings ranging from light rain to blimey that stings and i've lost a layer of skin which is how I like it. Nice large carpark and nicely situated in walking distance from Cockington, very pretty and quaint and Torquay. Plenty of nice places to eat in the evening and you can let yourself in whenever you have finished. All in all we really love staying in the Chaterhouse and hope to visit again soon with our grand daughter.

My girlfriend and I spent two nights at the Charterhouse and we cannot recommend it highly enough. The owners Les and Marion were so lovely - welcoming, friendly and really knew their stuff in terms of where to go around Torquay. We stayed in a wonderful room which was beautifully decorated and modern.

Thank you Les and Marion for a wonderful experience - worth the money for the breakfast alone!

Have just returned home from a most enjoyable four night break in Torquay. The Charterhouse proved to be a great choice for our accommodation, set in a lovely location, with easy walks into Cockington or Torquay centre. There is also a roomy on site car park. Marion and Les made us feel extremely welcome from the very minute we arrived. After our 3 hour journey, we very much appreciated the tea and home made flapjacks which were served to us in the lounge on our arrival. We were also given a map of the area by Les who went on to point out and mark on the map some local dog walks, as well as some dog friendly pubs in the area. We stayed in one of the two garden rooms in which dogs are permitted. The room has been refurbished and was immaculately clean and nicely decorated. It has a lovely en suite bathroom with a great double sized shower...big fluffy bath sheets are provided. The TV in our room was a modern flat screen type with intergrated freeview giving a very clear picture. I was also pleased that the free wi-fi allowed me to be able use my laptop in the room. A bit too cool to sit out during our stay, but I would imagine the garden and swimming pool would be very relaxing place to chill out during warmer weather. A very good selection is available at breakfast time. Other reviewers have mentioned the home made jams, marmalade and fresh home made bread on offer each morning.... I can confirm they are all very very yummy! The 'full english' Marion presented each morning were first class both in quality and quantity. Marion and Les are the ideal hosts and we can't wait to stay with them again.
