A lovely place to stay. Marion and Les are great hosts. Nice to be remembered by name. Very comfortable and clean hotel, facilities and guest areas are delightful. Good position to sea front and town, nice walks around too.A great place to come back to at the end of the day.

We had a great weekend staying at this B & B. Marion and Les are so friendly and welcoming and do everything to make the stay very comfortable indeed. They were very helpful and informative about the local area, what we could do, see and where we could eat and drink. The bed was so cosy and the room was spotless with everything we needed.
The breakfast is really superb with the cerials, fruits, juices, great coffee, beautifully cooked breakfasts and with wonderful homemade breads, marmelades and chutney. I can imagine that this is a very good place for children if you can get the family room and there is a small heated swimming pool that opens in May that is the perfect size for them.. Very well situated near the lovely village of Cockington and about 15 minute walk to the centre of Torquay. Would recommend this to anyone. Outstanding

This b&b is top class for comfort and cleanleness, just got back from a 3night stay, we have seen the transformation Marion and Les have made over the last few years. The rooms get better and better each time. The breakfasts- well you can't improve on perfection, the breakfasts have always been good. For people who don't like dogs please don't be put off by the dog friendly comment, dogs dont go in all rooms and the family dogs are lovely and will leave you alone if you want them to (my husband is allergic and doesn't have a problem here). We have stayed several times and will go back again.

Room Tip: all rooms are good, we have been slowly working our way around

We just spent a weekend at The Charterhouse - after booking up on recommendation from other's reviews.
We arrived on Friday evening after a frazzling 4 hour journey, and were instantly welcomed and shown up to our lovely room. We had The Riviera room - superking bed and lovely bathroom. A great peaceful room with a gorgeous view from all angles. The bed was ultra comfy - and I am very fussy! Had three very good night's sleep - which was only topped by a great breakfast. Choice of what to eat was good and they had proper meusli - not that awful sawdust Alpen! Despite being too full to really eat it - I tried Les's homemade bread in the morning and fell in love with it. Les and Marion really make you feel at home even when you are not at your most chatty on the morning!
We got out and about each day and were helped along by recommendation of where was good to eat and we even had dinner reservations made for us by Marion - very kind.
The location of The Charterhouse is perfect - a few minutes walk of all the good bits of Torquay but away from the road so as to not hear it. What more could you want.
I would certainly go back and pass this on to other friends to have the prefect weekend away.
We cycled from Torquay to Brixham one day and had a lovely seafood lunch before heading back - really good fun and not too far.
The Princess Theatre is really worth a visit - as is Man Friday fish restaurant, for first class food.
A visit to Coleton Fishacre at Kingswear is a good bit of culture to soak up for a relaxing day
- the house and gardens are breathtaking.

Room Tip: Rivera room is perfect

The Charterhouse provides the best environment to relax, enjoy some natural beauty on your doorstep (Torquay Seafront, Cockington Village) all whilst feeling in the comfort of your own home.

Put simply, I stayed at Charterhouse Hotel in Mar./2012 and didn't want to leave.

From the minute of arriving, Marion and Les were charming hosts. From the lovely warm welcome, to the breakfast discussions (which often involved fellow guests) and whilst enjoying a drink in Boots & Laces with Les, it was a pleasure to be in the hands of such a delightful couple.

I travelled from Tokyo to visit family in Torquay, and having made the trip on numerous occasions in the past, seldom can I remember such a good night sleep on arrival. The beds are incredibly comfortable, the rooms are well decorated and the surrounding environment outside is quiet and safe.

Breakfast was another highlight. The food quality is excellent, the variation on offer is broad and the atmosphere makes a good start to your day. I recommend trying the home-made Marmalade.

Many good hotels get an 'excellent' rating, which makes it difficult to establish a crème-de-la-crème of hotels. In this case, The Charterhouse Hotel is a superb hotel of the highest quality which guarantees you will not fail in enjoying at least one aspect of your holiday.

It's a shame the weather doesn’t come with the same guarantee ;-)

Chris.

We stayed at the hotel for a weekend in March. We were visiting Torquay and I was looking for a dog friendly B&B. I spent a lot of time looking on the Internet for somewhere that looked nice for us to stay and would also be good for our Springer Spaniel Mille.
The Charterhouse really did tick all the boxes. We stayed in the smaller of the garden rooms which was ample in size, the flooring is laminate which really took the pressure off us having to worry when Mille's feet were muddy. Having your own entrance is great for letting them in and out without disturbing any other guests. The room was extremely clean and nicely decorated.

The hotel is very close to the water meadow which was great for the dog and takes you straight into the thatched village, which has a dog friendly pub. In the opposite direction was the sea front with dog friendly beaches. We got a lot of pleasure from seeing what a great time Mille was having. If you are visiting with a dog that is anything like Mille (loves mud and water) I would suggest taking a dog towel with you, we took ours and was glad we did.

All the positive reviews about Marion and Les and their breakfasts are true.

I'm sure we will return to Devon and when we do, we will certainly be staying here again.

Thank you for your lovely review and we are really pleased that you all enjoyed your stay with us here at The Charterhouse. Yes, we are in a fabulous location, being so close to the Water Meadows leading straight to Cockington Country Park - ideal for amblers and dog walkers alike and just along from Livermead Beach – dog friendly all year round. We are happy to offer two garden rooms in which we allow a small pet dog and both of these rooms have their own separate entrance so that guests may come and go with their pet without disturbing our other guests. We do not allow dogs in any of the other guest bedrooms or in the main building.
Our large Family Garden Room is in the process of a complete refurbishment and we very much look forward to welcoming new guests into it shortly.

We arrived to a very warm welcome and were able to immediately relax after our journey with a tray of tea and biscuits, whilst our cases were taken from our car to our room..
Our room was immaculate, spacious and comfortable with nice views.
Marion and Les were a lovely couple, always on hand to offer advice on local amenities and recommended the best of local restaurants, and they take pride in providing a really full English Breakfast of home made and locally produced products.
Charterhouse enjoys a peaceful location only a few minutes from the sea and within easy reach of the town centre.
We have travelled the world and have no hesitation in recommending Marion, Les and their Charterhouse as the best!
