On arrival at Lifebuoy Cottage we had great difficulty finding which property we were staying in. The sign, shown clearly on advertised photos as saying 'Lifebuoy Cottage', was so worn it didn't have a single letter on it. When we eventually tried to unlock the door, the lock was also extremely worn. This was very problematic for the rest of our stay and it often took us at least 20 minutes to take the key out of the door after leaving the property.
When we first entered the property, we were very disappointed to find the downstairs floor was dirty. The stairs carpet was absolutely filthy and there was a large, old blood stain in the twin bedroom. The whole property was badly in need of painting, especially the walls going up the stairs which were marked and covered in dents. The sinks in the kitchen and bathroom were also unclean. As soon as we entered the bathroom we found the toilet seat was so cracked it was unsafe to sit on. We phoned the management company who eventually came to fix it, but in the meantime we had to find toilets in the town centre.
The small back yard was also very filthy - there was no way we could sit out here until we had given it a good clean.
In conclusion, we were very unhappy with the property and feel the advertised pictures didn't reflect the small, rundown, dirty property we stayed in and most certainly wasn't worth the high fee we paid for it compared to many other holiday cottages we have stayed in. Also, Blue Chip holidays who we booked through tried to accuse us of causing the blood stain in the bedroom and a dent on the stair wall weeks after our stay - the whole accusation was false, stressful and very disappointing - we would never book through them again.
We loved the cottage lovely location. Lots of nice walks in short distance. Great for a family. Well equipped. The parking place a short walk away. Shops & facilities nearby.
Stayed for 10 days, great location, sleeps 4 but would be a bit of a squeeze. Reserved car parking space 2 minute walk away which is up a hill so not so good for the elderly. 5 minute walk to harbour and shops

We actually stayed 11th June 2011 for one week, with two small dogs
The cottage was spotlessly clean and well equiped everything you need for a comfortable self catering holiday. Communication was excellent, with small enclosed court yard with gas barbeque. Plus no additional charge for electricity - would definately stay there again.
Message to Visit England
I can't understand Visit Englands criteria for issuing a 3 star when last year the apartment we should have stayed at didn't come anywhere near Lifebouy. Perhaps you might like to look at the training your inspecters do
