“Comfortable, hospitable place to stay.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 8 May 2012

I stayed at The Old Forge with five friends for three nights from Friday 4th. May. The room I shared was small but well-planned with just enough storage space. The beds were comfortable and the bed linen good quality. It was spotlessly cleaned after we went out each day: no barging in at breakfast time. There was plenty of hot water and the heating was on morning and evening so we were very snug. Breakfasts were excellent. Lots of choice of cold food from the buffet and cooked items cooked to order. Hot coffee was brought round several times. I would be very happy to stay there again.

Room Tip: Don't be put off by the size of your room. You can expect to be very comfortable.

I tend to see the positive side in things and am quite easy to please but my experience here was so bad I feel compelled to warn others. The place itself is nice - good location and rooms very small but clean (credit where credit's due) but the owners were unexpectedly rude. On arrival, we rang the bell and after 15 mins, rang again. Afteter 20 mins wait, i phoned to say we'd arrived. The owner marched out and, without saying hello, told us off for not ringing the bell. When we explained we had, he didn't seem to believe us. Rather an odd start! Later, when our room was freezing and we asked for our radiator to be turned on, he told us to use a plug in heater instead. When we came to pay, we were told there was a £5 supplement at the weekend - it does say this in the ts and cs but not on the price listed on the website when you book or by the price listed in the email confirmation. I felt duped and incredibly unwelcome.

Thank you for your review.
We are very sorry that we did not hear the bell. We were certainly not rude to you, just surprised that we hadn't heard it. I, myself the other owner, did not meet either of you so I couldn't have been rude to you!
My husband says he smiled at you when you arrived and explained that he usually never missed the bell.
The weather on the night you arrived was exceptionally bad. The heating was on but we had put an extra heater in the room just in case. When you came to complain we turned the heating up and explained that as well as the small heater there was a fan heater in the room for instant heat which we know you used. We are sorry you felt cold but we instantly rectified the problem and as the weather was unusually cold we feel that your complaint is unreasonable. We went out of our way to help you and sort the problem out.
The room the next morning was like a sauna and my staff had to fling all the windows open to clean it!
We do charge a £5 supplement for a one night stay on fridays and saturdays and this is clearly displayed on our website and the online terms and conditions. If guests make a phone booking it is always explained to them. We have always charged this supplement, it is not a hidden charge.

A luxurious B&B in a quiet location, yet only a 5min walk into Totnes. The Old Forge has charm and character. A beautiful room and ensuite with quality bedding and towels with the luxury of bathroom essentials such as body wash, shampoo and body lotion. I felt totally pampered. The proprietors have paid attention to every detail and the breakfasts are wonderful. There is an incredible choice of breakfasts available with very attentive service. Overall, I was very impressed with the quality and standard of The Old Forge. It was a night of sheer luxury and an opportunity to step away from the busyness of the day. The proprietors were friendly, helpful and able to fit me in at short notice. My only regret was that I couldn't stay for longer and try out the whirlpool spa. I would very much recommend The Old Forge.

Room Tip: The Old Forge is situated in a very quiet location, so I think that all rooms would be quiet and of...

We had a very nice stay here. Unfortunately, the bedroom was very small (it is an old building) and very stuffy at night, but had an excellent shower. Breakfast was nice and in a light breakfast room. Parking was an absolute plus staying totnes and the owners were very kind and let us leave our car after our stay with them had finsihed.

A very comfortable B&B tucked away in the lovely town of Totnes, Quiet and sunny location in a beautiful building. Lovely room with warm heating, tea facilities and very clean ensuite room with soft good quality bedding and soft towels. My partner and I stayed here a few days ago and we were very glad we chose this place to stay, The hosts were friendly and it was so lovely to be offered a cream tea in the garden on arrival after travelling on the train from London. I would definately recommend this B&B to others. Very comfortable and closet/wardorbe very spacious. Breakfasts very nicely done with a selection of cereals and cooked breakfasts. Vegetarians well catered for - would not hesitate to stay here again. Close to station and main town centre. Thank you.

This is a very well run Bed and breakfast in the middle of Totnes. arrived Monday 13.00 greeted by the owner who showed us around, was able to go straight to our room. This room is very clean, warm and well decorated the beds are very comfortable. The rooms are on the small side but you have to expect this of a building of this great age and character. The breakfasts are of good quality with a wide veriety to suit everybodys taste. Location is great 5 minute walk to the centre of a very nice town. car park on site. The owners are very professional and help you with any questions you have. All in all well recommended.

Lovely old character property. Our room was exceptionally clean, the bathroom was spotless, the bed very comfortable. Very quiet location ideal for a good nights sleep. Friendly, helpful owner and plenty of parking.

I have been advised by Tripadvisor to respond to this review.
After checking all our bookings for October this year, we realised that we only had two bookings for the Cottage that month, both for regular guests who stay with us year after year and do not live in Canterbury. A close family member stayed in the Cottage for the rest of October because their own property was being renovated. We have no record of a guest from Canterbury at all this year.

We are never 'grumpy' with our guests and consider this comment quite insulting. We have been in the hospitality industry for 30 years now and have made many friends through our business.

We are a Bed and Breakfast establishment, not a self-catering establishment. Why would a guest expect a 'stove' in their room!?

We make it clear on our website that although the Cottage has a small kitchenette with a microwave and fridge, it is not a self catering cottage but is bed and breakfast accommodation. There are photos of the Cottage interior on the online booking section of our website and it is clear that there is no 'stove' in there.

As stated in a response to a very similar and very recent review, this property is a 600 year old Smithy and the Cottage is the original Wheelwrights Cottage. Most of our guests feel that the Old Forge is full of character. We even have our own original jail cell complete with ghosts! It definitely has character.

Two years ago we installed a large storage heater in this room, this is on top of central heating.
We had a new boiler last year which means that the heating is extra efficient. Just in case we have a guest who still feels the cold ie. a small baby or elderly person there is a 2kw convector heater and a small oil heater for the twin room if needed. The Cottage is never cold.
