An object lesson in hospitality

Review of The Star
5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed Jun 3, 2024via mobile
It’s rare to find a hotel that gets everything right. Now I’ve found it. From the decor to the service to the food - everything was effortlessly perfect
I’ve paid considerably more and received considerably less in other hotels so clearly the Hotel Inspector knows her business.
Other hoteliers should take note

My wife and I booked to stay at the Star Inn based on watching the 3 episodes of the "build", following the Hotel inspector over many years and seeing the detail of what went into transforming the Inn to what it is today. STAFF - Excellent, friendly professional. LUNCH, DINNER & BREAKFAST - Small selection but varied choice, which made sense. It was faultless and top quality produce. HOTEL - Attention to detail is like nothing else. Everywhere and everything is faultless. ROOM - As the hotel and the room finish is perfect and attention to detail is spot on. The mattress is superb. Would we recommend - YES. Are we coming back - YES. Alex and Olga have made this a very special Hotel indeed.

The Star is beautifully decorated, as you would expect from a Polizzi hotel. It has cosy pub vibes at the front and chic everywhere else.

One of the highlights of The Star is the inviting library room, a perfect spot to unwind. Equipped with a chess board and a collection of curated books from the local book shop, it's a haven for relaxation.

The room was great, and the bathroom was fab; the only letdowns were the lack of toilet roll folds and a fridge for fresh milk, although this was available from reception, which was a bit of a faff.

The fire alarm going off three times on Saturday night was annoying, but these things happen, and the hotel handled it well.

Alfriston is a beautiful village, surrounded by fabulous countryside. Recommend a visit to this part of East Sussex and this lovely gem of a hotel.

Perfect - a really lovely place: we stayed at The Star for our wedding anniversary, and it was a perfect trip away. The Star is a beautiful hotel, welcoming and special without being pretentious. We had a lovely room, and it was nice having a dog-friendly room that was immaculate (often dog-friendly equates to shabby, sadly) and with a pretty terrace. The bed was super-comfortable, with immaculate linen; the room well-appointed and the staff could not be more professional, friendly, helpful or smiley. Good food too.
Alfriston is a perfect spot too; a picturesque Downland village near the sea.
Thank you to The Star for making our Anniversary extra special.

Room tip: Just book and go - it’s lovely

Imaculate accomadation, delicous food, unobtrusive and excellent service from every member of staff who have been so well tained. We stayed in this hotel the year it opened so we were delighted to find that it is not loosing any of it's pleasing attributes. In fact I believe that the hotel is now better than in the first year. During our stay we note that the hotel was expanding their courtyard which I hope will incorperate some sunloungers for the warmer days. We look forwards to returning.

Room tip: Preplan your days as there is plenty to do in the area

A sublime combination of English Heritage, Sussex Flint served Polizzi style. Gorgeous courtyard dining with genius planting and super beautiful plump outdoor sofas, a feast for all the senses. Service is wonderful, gracious, easy, professional, with Alex mucking in (literally! - what a star) all sparkly and very much hands on. The wines by the glass are really well chosen and interesting, bar snacks of freshly baked flaky straw twists and spicy olives arrive and then the food comes out, superb ingredients prepared simply and beautifully, proper portions too! No tweezers here. We dined in the Inn each night in the oldest part of the building where the ancient Pilgrims Post graces the East Wall with its presence, what stories this room can tell and does thanks to Hayden who was a joy with his partner Cami. The decor is O.P’s signature quiet elegance, everything so carefully put together with no expense spared. Our room was a dog friendly Classic terrace and was perfect for us, however, if we were just us two I’d book the Olga Suite for certain, it is a masterpiece in cool greys and citrus yellows, with big windows, lots of light. Alfriston the place is very much a star here too, as is the surrounding landscape and local Rathfinny Wine Estate. I am already looking at when we can next visit. Don’t bother flying anywhere, just book a room here or come for lunch because in the summer it is as good as being in Sardinia or on the Ile de Re.
