Description: Considered by many to be Brighton's best restaurant, backed up by its status as the highest scoring local dining room in the Good Food Guide, The Restaurant at Drakes is an elegantly stylish setting for any occasion. Subtle lighting casts moody shadows across exposed brickwork and rich colours throughout the intimate dining room while Drakes cocktail bar offers airy sea views and excellent cocktails. The kitchen team insist on the best of ingredients, fresh and seasonal, including fish bought daily from local fishing boats, to create the excellent, refined menu that has earned the restaurant two AA rosettes. A special place, unpretentious in its warm atmosphere, it's easy to see why The Restaurant at Drakes has such a reputation.

It was my dad and step-mum's 25th wedding anniversary, a very special occasion. We had a round of cocktails in the bar which were delicious. When our table in the restaurant was ready they took unfinished drinks for us. The restaurant was in a basement, fairly small and intimate but beautifully set.
Service throughout was impeccable- they took our coats, kept glasses topped up. The sommelier was awesome, really knew his stuff!
Despite the pomp and high end service, there was nothing stuffy or pretentious about the place- just genuine and friendly staff who were so professional and personable. A perfect balance of excellent service with attentive staff, and privacy and space to enjoy our evening. You just felt so valued and it made a perfect evening. I would definitely come again, I cannot fault the experience! Worth every penny.

Visited this with friends, really enjoyed the ambiance of both the bar and the restaurant, tables not too close together, tables laid with linen, attentive and friendly staff and great food.

The taster was very welcome and delicious - smoked mackrel. Husband had lamb and I had beef. The flavours were out of this world and all was cooked beautifully. Desserts so tasty - the cherries in Kirsch "wow".

After 2 hours in this restaurant, we had an amuse bouche, a lot of bread, wine and two courses. The extended time between anything happening became an issue and spoiled the evening. We were shown immediately to our table then waited about 10 minutes before we were given a menu. Another long wait until someone asked us if we wanted a drink. Then a wait to order, at which point my partner was told the filet steak was not available, he would have sirloin. In a better restaurant this would have been mentioned when the menus were handed over and also would have been reflected in a reduction in price, sirloin being an inferior cut to filet. I asked for the halibut, without the sausage, which might have alerted a more clued-up staff that I was one of the many fish-eating vegetarians of this world. It didn't, so a chicken-based amuse bouche was plonked in front of me. We had to call out to the waitress to tell her I couldn't eat it, as she was scurrying away very quickly. The almond and carrot soup replacement was very nice. The quality of the food, however, didn't really make up for the long waits in between courses. It didn't appear to be a staffing issue - there were plenty of waiting people and the restaurant is not huge. We ate late, so by the end of our ordeal the place was fairly empty, only the other tables in the 'private' dining room left. We decided against dessert, particularly after we had to wait about 5 minutes for the menu to be brought to us. My suspicion is that the kitchen is not big enough to handle the number of covers. This is part of a hotel, a fairly small seaside terrace in Brighton. I can't imagine it has a big kitchen. If you are not in a hurry and have some way of amusing yourself for about 40 or more minutes between courses, then the food is probably worth it. Otherwise you could opt for somewhere that maybe doesn't have quite as good food but gets everything else right. There's a happy medium between being rushed over your dinner and sitting at a table wondering where your next meal is coming from. Drakes is of the latter persuasion, and there are plenty of places in Brighton that fall along the middle of the range.
