We stayed at both The Smugglers Retreat and The Birdcage which are next door and joined by a rear balcony. The cottages look great and are generally very comfortable. All our guests commented on how attractive they were and that they made the weekend very special.
We were met by the Housekeeper at the cottages when collecting the keys and she was very flexible, allowing us to occupy the cottages a few hours early as they were empty - this was a big help as we had guests arriving throughout the day.
I would certainly stay here again, and would recommend to friends, but would mention two factors you should take into consideration before booking:
1. Given the age and character of the cottages they are fairly small and have quite steep and narrow staircases. This was OK for us, but may not suit everyone. We took the option of the sofa beds but taking the living rooms out of action and using them as sleeping space did make it feel a bit cramped.
2. At night it is noisy on the weekends - the cottages usefully provided earplugs - and those in rooms higher up are less affected, but as occupier of the sofa bed on the ground floor it was hard to ignore the revellers walking past the house in the wee hours. Again this was not too much of a problem for us as we were out fairly late ourselves, but is worth knowing.
