Excellent gallery with a good mixture of paintings and ceramics/crafts. A lot of the items are reasonably priced starting as low as £10 upwards. Exhibitions appear to change regularly and staff are helpful

My wife and I always pop in here when we go to Rye. It's one of our favourite galleries. The art here is always quirky and interesting and at the moment there is a small exhibition by David Crew a local artist who is just fantastic. There is lots to buy from a card for a few pounds to thousands for original pieces. We came out of there today with a ceramic raven head ! Very friendly staff too
Highly recommended

Lovely collection, staff so friendly and I couldn’t believe there was such a great gallery in a town so small. The lady behind counter recommended us the cafe opposite too which was great! Thankyou!

I wanted to write this to disagree strongly with the lady who gave this great gallery a bad review because they sell digital prints. I’ve just visited and thought it was a great and fun mix and so good to see paintings reproduced really well as prints that most could afford. I paint and am very well aware that my pictures cost more than most people who like them can warrant spending. I am happy to sell digital versions of the originals if I feel they are good enough to sign and number, they are not a money spinner as the reviewer implied. Good art prints are not cheap to have made, and the artist makes very little from a sale, but it’s a nice warm fuzzy feeling to have your work going into the world, especially in such a democratic way. I often buy digital prints myself, there seems to be some sort of snobbery going on here. When have we not bought prints of paintings we like? Just look in any town to see that this is a REALLY great and FUN gallery. Anyway - rant over. So go and buy a print.

Spread over several floors and not only full of interesting art but also a lovely building with sneaky views over Rye and the surrounding area. Make sure you get to the top floor where there is a special exhibition room

On a recent visit to Rye, I visited the well known Rye Art Gallery.
Here I was disappointed to find a disproportionate amount of
‘giclees’ (digital reproductions) adorning the walls and what is worse,
the labels did not identify them as such.

By omitting the fact that the framed images on display are giclees and by giving them an arbitrary edition number they are purposefully giving the impression to the public that they are limited edition original prints and not
digital reproductions.

The prices of these giclee reproductions are several hundred pounds each,
as much as some of the original art work on display.

After making my objections about this to gallery staff who’s attitude was aloof and arrogant I was told, ‘you have made your point’.

My impression is that the remit of this gallery is not to educate and inform the public about the art that they are selling but rather to confuse and make as much money as they can by selling expensive reproductions to an unsuspecting public who deserve better.

We are very grateful to Niyra for her review. We are always pleased to receive comments which enable us to continually improve what we do and how we do it.
To answer the points raised, firstly the Gallery does have “giclees” for sale but these do represent a very small proportion of the total on our walls at any one time
However, the observations about our labelling for the giclees and their numbering are matters that we will now review and we are grateful to Niyra for her helpful comments. Indeed we will for all new giclee hangings ensure that the label does refer to the picture being a giclee. I must also apologise if our staff appeared to be unhelpful
The Gallery is a Charitable Trust and part of our responsibilities is to increase knowledge by the display of the highest quality contemporary art for sale and in our extensive permanent collection. In addition, we engage in many activities outside of the exhibiting of art work – both for sale and from our permanent collection – such as workshops, talks etc. all as part of our aims to educate and inform. However, we do rely upon the sale of our art in order that the Gallery continues to prosper and provide free entry and many free events. As a charity, we do not make profits for distribution and our customers over the years have found they can buy really good art for affordable prices.
In thanking Niyra once again for her comments, I would like to assure her that what she has said will be reviewed, but at the same time underline that giclees are only a small part of the outstanding art we have for sale. I do hope that next time she is in Rye she will visit us again and have a far better experience. We would welcome her update
