My wife and I stayed in this hotel in the run up to Christmas. We were looking for a place offering a quiet and central base in central Hertford.
First impressions were excellent: after realising a room got free on the Internet (the hotel had shown full a few days before but there must have been a cancellation) I called and booked for one night. The phone reception was very pleasant and they sent me an acknowledgement email within minutes, which is always reassuring. Getting there was fine, the hotel has its own free car park, on the side of the building, maybe one minute walk away. The entrance was charming, a round shape wooden door gives access to a warm corridor with reception and various restaurant and bar rooms. Wooden stairs and a succession of corridors led us to a nice and clean room. The hotel is set in an older building and the rooms whilst not very large, are tastefully decorated and very well equipped with TV, free wifi, and a large tray with usual tea/coffee and bottles of water, all included in the price. We had asked a very early checkin, and the hotel had managed to arrange a room for us, which was very helpful to us, and well beyond their "call of duty". It turned out that there was some outside noise (it was daytime so this was very acceptable, but we needed to catch up on sleep after an overnight journey) and they changed us without any issue. The other room was very quiet, probably a bonus compared to the other reviews of other hotels in the area. The bathroom was feeling new, with a large and efficient shower (the first room had a bath), again with complimentary products, and (I like that) very fluffy towels.
We had room service, good decent tasty food, very affordable.
The night was very quiet - the bed comfortable.
Breakfast was a choice between continental, full English or fish (kippers/salmon) option. The young lady serving breakfast was very efficient and courteous. In terms of food I usually rate breakfasts by the quality of their sausage and this one was very high. Coffee was strong and flavoursome.
Checkout was straightforward, concluding what was a very good stay, in a place that felt very welcoming and not part of a chain. (it turns out that the owners are linked to a brewery and own a number of pubs, and this is their sole hotel). The hotel was busy, but never did it feel like waiting or queuing, and always meeting smily staff.
I very much recommend the place and will stay again should I need an overnight in Hertford.

Room Tip: It seems rooms have a choice of bath or shower. Best ask when booking. Web and phone prices are the same.

A fantastic, true British institution, offering excellent service, accommodation and food. Full of character - have been lots of times - and will definitely be going again - not to be missed.

Room Tip: Its in the centre of Hertford so ask for a quiet room at the back of the hotel

Just back from an excellent lunch with friends and wanted to share how good an experience we have just had. The serving staff were very polite, attentive and efficient. We were in a lovely old panelled bar with a most relaxing atmosphere, which is good as parking is a nightmaree in Hertford! Top Tip: The Gascoyne Way multistorey car park is a short walk away and the charges are reasonable for this day and age.

We drove up from Hampshire and had a very good welcome from the staff and were able to deposit our bags and freshen up before lunch.
Our room was very comfortable and the breakfast was to die for, with the staff on duty being very helpful and nothing was too much bother. We will certainly be back again next year.

Room Tip: Just ask for what you need, this is a very old hotel built in 1507 and has a variety of stairs, so make yourself clear to the staff.

The salisbury Arms is a proper little old world hotel (with state of the art bathrooms though) Very very comfortable and a totally at-home atmosphere. Lovely staff with a great sense of humour, nothing was too much trouble and they have great bar food and excellent breakfasts. Little bit difficult to find your way into the car park because of the one way system so prepare your maps well before you go. If you find yourself staying in Hertford overnight definitely stay here.

Room Tip: Hotel's right in the town centre, so all rooms have a view of something else in the town centre and it doesn't really matter what it is. Most rooms are on the first floor. Top floor rooms - the higher numbers - are lovely and quiet. Not sure if they're all singles like mine was (30) but they have the most character as they're under the eves, and the stairs aren't too arduous. Be sure to stop off at the shoe polisher!
