My wife and I spent Christmas at the Salisbury Arms while visiting offspring who could not accommodate us and thoroughly enjoyed it. It is one of those places that offers everything the traveller or shopper could want (accommodation, meals and drinks - alcoholic and otherwise - throughout the day, etc) and does everything well and most of it very well. The public parts of the hotel are welcoming, with dark panelling, an assortment of seats and tables, and newspapers to read. The bar offers a good range of food and drinks, including several well-kept real ales from the owners, the local brewers McMullens. I can't comment on the quality of the bar food as we didn't eat in there but that in the more formal restaurant is excellent. Our room was clean, warm and comfortable with a spacious shower cubicle and a shower which could reasonably be likened to a hot fire hose. Failings were minor. Clothes hanging space was only just adequate, a couple of bulbs were out, there was a bit of rot in some woodwork round the shower (imperfect door seal) and very weak wi-fi in our room. Service was always friendly and mostly very good, the only thing I would fault being a certain lack of attentiveness by the servers at breakfast which resulted in the buffet table's running out of cereals/fruit/juices. These are minor points so, overall, very good indeed and highly recommended.

Room Tip: Try to get a room towards the back of the hotel, particularly at weekends when the street at the front can get busy and noisy in the evenings.

My wife and I stayed in this hotel in the run up to Christmas. We were looking for a place offering a quiet and central base in central Hertford.
First impressions were excellent: after realising a room got free on the Internet (the hotel had shown full a few days before but there must have been a cancellation) I called and booked for one night. The phone reception was very pleasant and they sent me an acknowledgement email within minutes, which is always reassuring. Getting there was fine, the hotel has its own free car park, on the side of the building, maybe one minute walk away. The entrance was charming, a round shape wooden door gives access to a warm corridor with reception and various restaurant and bar rooms. Wooden stairs and a succession of corridors led us to a nice and clean room. The hotel is set in an older building and the rooms whilst not very large, are tastefully decorated and very well equipped with TV, free wifi, and a large tray with usual tea/coffee and bottles of water, all included in the price. We had asked a very early checkin, and the hotel had managed to arrange a room for us, which was very helpful to us, and well beyond their "call of duty". It turned out that there was some outside noise (it was daytime so this was very acceptable, but we needed to catch up on sleep after an overnight journey) and they changed us without any issue. The other room was very quiet, probably a bonus compared to the other reviews of other hotels in the area. The bathroom was feeling new, with a large and efficient shower (the first room had a bath), again with complimentary products, and (I like that) very fluffy towels.
We had room service, good decent tasty food, very affordable.
The night was very quiet - the bed comfortable.
Breakfast was a choice between continental, full English or fish (kippers/salmon) option. The young lady serving breakfast was very efficient and courteous. In terms of food I usually rate breakfasts by the quality of their sausage and this one was very high. Coffee was strong and flavoursome.
Checkout was straightforward, concluding what was a very good stay, in a place that felt very welcoming and not part of a chain. (it turns out that the owners are linked to a brewery and own a number of pubs, and this is their sole hotel). The hotel was busy, but never did it feel like waiting or queuing, and always meeting smily staff.
I very much recommend the place and will stay again should I need an overnight in Hertford.

Room Tip: It seems rooms have a choice of bath or shower. Best ask when booking. Web and phone prices are the same.

A fantastic, true British institution, offering excellent service, accommodation and food. Full of character - have been lots of times - and will definitely be going again - not to be missed.

Room Tip: Its in the centre of Hertford so ask for a quiet room at the back of the hotel

Just back from an excellent lunch with friends and wanted to share how good an experience we have just had. The serving staff were very polite, attentive and efficient. We were in a lovely old panelled bar with a most relaxing atmosphere, which is good as parking is a nightmaree in Hertford! Top Tip: The Gascoyne Way multistorey car park is a short walk away and the charges are reasonable for this day and age.
