My wife and I have just spent two nights at the Salisbury Arms. Arrived early on Friday, phoned from their car park and was told we could check in. First room was fine, but it was at the top of the hotel--listed building, no lifts. The nice young lady assigned to help us with our bags, was we were pleased to see also puffing by the time we got into the room. Asked for another room--at 73 cant be doing with all those stairs, and after a few minutes we were allocated another room on the first floor--sorted!!
Had a brilliant stay; plenty of places to sit and drink in the hotel; wide choice of bar food which was excellent and good portions. Breakfast one of the best--all freshly cooked and menu is excellent, and you can guess what the restaurant is like!!
All the staff were very helpful and aware of what was and wasn't possible, so never any nasty surprises. As we have family in this area, we will be visiting again in the summer and no debate as to where we will be staying.

Room Tip: Apparently some guests have complained about noise outside in the lower level rooms. We did not have an issue with this, but you may want to mention it when booking along with room location if like us you are getting on a bit!!

What a find, double executive room was excellent, 1st class full English breakfast with locally produced sausage & bacon etc...
hotel is oldest in town & listed so lots of original character features.
Hotel was full when we stayed as were both bar areas & the lounge, a good advert for a Wednesday in January.
Staff were helpful & courteous especially the desk manager.
Wouldn't hesitate to return or recommend to others.
Well done to the Salisbury Arms team.

My wife and I spent Christmas at the Salisbury Arms while visiting offspring who could not accommodate us and thoroughly enjoyed it. It is one of those places that offers everything the traveller or shopper could want (accommodation, meals and drinks - alcoholic and otherwise - throughout the day, etc) and does everything well and most of it very well. The public parts of the hotel are welcoming, with dark panelling, an assortment of seats and tables, and newspapers to read. The bar offers a good range of food and drinks, including several well-kept real ales from the owners, the local brewers McMullens. I can't comment on the quality of the bar food as we didn't eat in there but that in the more formal restaurant is excellent. Our room was clean, warm and comfortable with a spacious shower cubicle and a shower which could reasonably be likened to a hot fire hose. Failings were minor. Clothes hanging space was only just adequate, a couple of bulbs were out, there was a bit of rot in some woodwork round the shower (imperfect door seal) and very weak wi-fi in our room. Service was always friendly and mostly very good, the only thing I would fault being a certain lack of attentiveness by the servers at breakfast which resulted in the buffet table's running out of cereals/fruit/juices. These are minor points so, overall, very good indeed and highly recommended.

Room Tip: Try to get a room towards the back of the hotel, particularly at weekends when the street at the front can get busy and noisy in the evenings.
