Il Posticino is an absolute gem. It’s actually fairly difficult to define as calling it an Italian restaurant conjures up a mental image of the standard menu of Italian classics and Il Posticino doesn’t really go in that direction...

It’s homely but many of the dishes are practically fine dining; easily on the same level as Abode (County Restaurant) or The Ambrette.

It’s Italian food but with added unexpected flourishes of ingredients such as ginger, radish or pink peppercorns.

Every meal we’ve had here has been exquisite and, when at many restaurants I’ve ordered off the specials menu only to be disappointed (“ah, so that’s why it's not on the main menu”), we're constantly delighted by what’s on offer here.

The service has always been faultless: friendly and attentive.

It’s great for couples or families. We go with our daughter and, despite being quite a picky eater, she demolishes the kids’ ragù (with good reason – it’s amazing).

Go there, get a classy starter, a luscious pasta/risotto and one of their amazing desserts. Finish with a grappa and walk away with a giant smile on your face.

The food here is beautiful and very authentic. The atmosphere is nice and the staff are pleasant. The service is quite slow but I’d like to think it is because the food is being prepared properly without frozen shortcuts.

The only downfall here is that the portions are too small for the price. I had two courses, main and dessert, and sadly still felt hungry upon leaving. Having spent almost £100 (2 adults/2 children) it would have been nice to feel full. I had a bass fillet in case you were wondering.

I would still recommend this restaurant for special occasions

My husband and I spent a few days in Canterbury as a valentine treat and were very amazed to find a truly authentic Italian restaurant tucked away in a little road not far from Canterbury city centre.
Being Italian ourselves, our expections are high when it comes to Italian food and il posticino met those expections 100%.
The menu was different and innovative compared to your usual Italian menues whereby let's face it, they usually only offer commerial touristy dishes but not il posticino.
The ingredients were fresh, the flavours authentic and we truly felt like we were dining in Italy.
Jerry, the chef as well as the co-owner, was truly outstanding and it was also a pleasure after having spoken to him, to find out that he was Tuscany as is my husband.
His partner and also co-owner Cristina, was very professional and a delightful lady.
My husband and I enjoyed eating at il posticino so much, that we dinned there two days in a row, 16th and 17th February 2018. We arrived in Canterbury on the 15th and left on the 18th and on our arrival date, we did try another Italian restaurant who's food was not comparable to that of the posticino at all. In fact, it's a shame that we did not go to the posticino when we first arrived to Canterbury, as we would have dinned there all 3 nights of our stay.
My husband and I went for a fish feast on both nights. The mussels and clams starters were a delight. I then had sea bream ravioli with a fish sauce which was to die for, I could not fault it. The flavours were incredible. My husband had black squid ink linguini with lobster and he also enjoyed every mouthful of it. Both dishes were beautifully presented. We then followed with deep fried seafood and it was a proper Italian deep fried seafood. It was light, crispy, and delicious as well as it containing a good selection of fish. The portions were huge. We both ended the meal with a dessert to share as we were full but did want to try one of Jerry's dessert. We choose a vinsanto pannacotta with crushed Tuscan cantucci and a coulis of fruits of the forests. Well, what can I say.......simply delicious and again, a very original twist to the great pannacotta dessert and of course being lovers of vinsanto and cantucci, it went down a treat.
I can only say that the hubby and I want to go back to Canterbury just to dine at il posticino and that says it all really. Do try it and I am sure you will not be disappointed.
Jerry and Cristina keep up the excellent work and see you soon.

Our second visit here & this is by far the BEST restaurant my husband & I have eaten at, in Canterbury. Tucked away in a street behind the cinema, it is a little gem. Every dish we have tried here has been perfect...proper Italian cooking, beautifully presented & of a high quality. No pizzas on the menu here, thank goodness ! The staff are extremely polite & friendly & we were made to feel very welcome on both occasions. We will definitely return.
