Out for a drive and wondering where we could get a quality Sunday lunch at 2pm in the afternoon. Looking to avoid the usual pub chains we decided to try The Old English Gentleman. Inside looked clean, cosy and welcoming. We ordered drinks at the bar and at the same time decided to try the roast beef lunch. It arrived approximate 15 minutes later and looked great; two large slices of beef, Yorkshire pudding, mashed potato, carrots, peas, broccoli, cabbage, roast potatoes, parsnip, parsley and gravy. It was also served with usual condiments. All of it was very tasty and served nice and hot. At £8.95 each it was certainly value for money. The tables were dressed with cutlery, wine glasses, napkins and a (lit) candle. The pudding was limited to plum and blackberry crumble but no other option on that day. We finished with coffee which came in a large cafatierre and complimentary pack of two biscuits each. Overall, a very pleasant experience - great food and friendly efficient service. Will definitely go again.

After visiting the OEG for Sunday lunch we decided that it would be a good idea to book for a meal and drinks before visiting Hull New Theatre.

Michael and his team work very hard to keep the pub as friendly as possible and as you would expect before a sell out performance the place was heaving!

We were quickly served and shown to our table which we had reserved. The food is freshly prepared so you are advised to let them know what you would like before you arrive - all four meals were of very good quality and absolutely roasting hot. Very large portions too in a home cooked style which suits us just fine.

We had scampi, Kiev, lamb and pork all of which were excellent and very reasonably priced.

No hesitation in recommending a visit for food or drinks. Soak in the atmosphere visit again after the performance and you might see the artists you have just been watching!

We arrived fairly late and with a dog. We asked about food and they were more than willing to serve us. They explained that the food is based on what has been cooked rather than a menu.the food was well cooked and fresh. We were asked if we wanted further drinks and they brought them to the table so we did not have to disturb our dog. Everyone was friendly and even brought some food out for our dog.

My son was in Cilla the Musical in the theatre next door and on the night I visited, the cast and visitors went into the pub after the show. Nothing was too much trouble for the staff behind the bar who were cheerful, chatty and charming. The place was buzzing with a most convivial atmosphere and we were all treated as if we were regular customers rather than people who were only in Hull for a few days. Fab.
