Jenkin Crag is on a lovely walk between Ambleside and Troutbeck and is highly recommended. The trees are now very mature and the views are not as great as they must have been in Edwardian times, but it's nice to be within a deciduous wood as a contrast to other parts of the walk which are quite high and open.

Fantistic views!! Great panorama of the lake and surrounding fells. Views of the lake curving away around the horizon.

Walking from Troutbeck to Ambleside we stopped to look at Jenkin Crag which gave us a view of some of Windermere and a welcome break. We heard the woodland birds and even a cuckoo of which there seemed to be plenty in the Lake District this month. Definitely need lots of breath to get to if coming from Ambleside as on a slope, but a gentle climb and is found on the descent if walking from Troutbeck.

Most of the walk we did took place on bridle paths, quite a bit of which were slate pieces underfoot. As the weather was typical for “The Lakes” ie heavy rain, the paths were like streams, so apart from the odd muddy patch, we were grateful for the generally firm ground. It is quite a steady climb up to Jenkin Crag and the view once there, even in the rain, is well worth it. We continued our walk over the hills and along lanes, to Bowness, with only the last couple of miles being next to the main road. A pleasant ferry ride delivered us back to our starting point.

Last time I was in Ambleside we got told about this route but we never managed to get round to it, last weekend I took mum to Ambleside and mentioned it to her, not knowing how tiring it actually was. I said to her that this is the start and we will have to look out for signs to know where to go, I and mum do like a good hike but even this was testing our limits! We ran out of water half way up, so I climbed down to a stream to fill up, the water was gorgeous!:D The views were incredible, peace and quiet

We walked here from where we were staying in Waterhead as it's part of a nice circular route that heads up to Wansfell Pike, which is definitely worth doing! Jenkin Crag offers a nice view of Lake Windermere! Bring good footwear are the path can be mildly uneven and steep at parts.

Stunning views over the lake and to the hills in the distance. Not suitable for people with mobility issues, lots of tree roots and rocks.

A short steep walk out of Ambleside with some good views across Windermere when you get there. The signs can be a bit confusing and it is easy to wander off the main track and get into the paths in the woods. Best done as part of a longer hike.

I did this as part of a circular walk from Ambleside (going via Wansfell Pike) and whilst Jenkin Crag is ok, it is not as high (so doesn't give many good views). I'd suggest exerting yourseld and going to Wansell Pike.
