“Couldn't fault it!”
Reviewed 1 January 2011

I have to say I am on the whole very critical of hotels but I really couldn't fault this one. My husband and I stayed here with another couple for New Years Eve. We only booked the night before and struggled to find anywhere available in Ambleside so having found this hotel had two rooms we weren't expecting it to be one of the best. In fact it was great. First of all on arrival there was parking available which if you are familiar with Ambleside is a real bonus. Its also close enough to the centre to walk anywhere you like. The rooms are huge. We had the cheapest room available but it happened to be a family sized one so was well worth it. The rooms are very clean, modern and appear recently decorated,. Ours being a family room, we had two televisions. The breakfast was decent enough. Ok its continental but there is a very wide selection of foods available. To finish off the staff are very friendly and welcoming. We booked via booking.com which only gave us the option of a twin room. Within minutes of booking on the internet I received a call from the hotel asking whether or not we would want the room making up as a double. Excellant! As I say, I couldn't fault it and will definitely stay here again (that is if I can pursuade my husband not to camp!)

We enjoyed our stay at Brathay Lodge. It was a good base for walking in the day and for going out to eat in the evening.
There was good range of options for breakfast - good coffee too.
Plenty of parking which we were allowed to use for the rest of the day after we had checked out so we squeezed out another walk on the fells.
Staff were friendly, especially when we arrived. Everything was explained in detail and we were shown to our room - a change from the "up the stairs and turn left" that is now the norm in most hotels.
We'll be back.

I enjoyed my stay in one of the pet friendly rooms, the only pet with me was my wife. The room was larger than in most hotels; very well equipped and clean. The continental breakfast was fine, the bed comfortable and the staff friendly and helpful. Being in the annexe I could even have a cigarette - god forbid - without dangling out of a window! The car parking space was a plus for Ambleside, which incidentally is well blessed with decent restaurants. I'll be back!

We were originally in another B&B which we did not like. My wife walked past Brathay Lodge and the owner was very helpful in finding us a room at short notice. We do not have any pets but found that the only room avaialble was one on the ground floor. This turned out to be a pet friendly one (the dog bowl outside the door gave a clue!). Not totally ideal but as it was short notice we didnñt have much choice. The room was clean and the bed very comfortable.
The location was ideal - a two minute walk into the town and views across the park / bowling green to the hills. The breakfast was good (not the full english, but more than enough on offer to fill you up for a day´s activities). We will definately look to Bratahy Lodge when we return to Ambleside, only this time we will book in enough time to get a "no pets" room. Our only grumble would be that the spa bath had dog hairs in the system (ie when you turn on the spa jets dog hairs appeared in the water) - but that is down to the typical thoughless dog owners in the room previously I suppose who clean their animals in the bath.

Set in the quaint village of Ambleside.

This B&B is ideal if there are a few of you. I would not stay here for a romantic weekend or something special.

There is nobody on reception after 18hrs, there is a phone number to call, but it also states in 'emergency'. They have internet but a code is needed, rather difficult if you arrive late.

The rooms are fine, clean and comfortable, not necessarily luxurious.

Breakfast is 'buffet style'. Plenty available, fruit, meats etc. No cooked breakfasts. We found on the Sunday morning, there really was not enough room to accommodate all the guests who all arrived at the same time.

There is parking here which is really useful.

All in all, a reasonable place to stay but I would try somwhere different next time.

This is the fourth time that we have stayed at the Brathey-Lodge and each time in a different room. The rooms are excellent and the four poster rooms are more like a suite than a bedroom. The hotel is very clean and the staff very friendly. The continental buffet breakfast has a very good selection (ideal start to the day if you are about to set off to tackle the fells). Ideally located for walkers and those that like to take life at a more leisurely pace Will be returning later in the year.

Just back from weekend in Ambleside staying at Brathay Lodge. We had driven past the B&B before and noticed it advertises jacuzzi baths in every room. We booked a Superior room which was a nice room and the bath was fabulous. Only problem was it was up three flights of stairs, the last flight being a very narrow set of stairs which was a nightmare to get up when you were carrying cases etc! The hotel receptionist saw me struggling and asked if I wanted any help - we were already at the room door!

The B&B is unmanned from 5/6pm which gives it an air of neglect about it. There is an emergency telephone at reception if needed. I honestly don't know how you could have had banter with the staff as firstly, you never really see anyone, and secondly when you do they seem a bit depressed or a bit sad and really the whole B&B had an air of sadness about it, somehow. Maybe the staff were sad about the the weather but we live in the UK and it rains a lot!!

The breakfast is a continental breakfast and was perfectly acceptable but a bit soulless.

The hotel advertises as a B&B with style but to be honest I never seen the style part of it.

All in all we had a nice break but wouldn't go back to this particular B&B again.
