We popped in on our walk into Coniston. My husband asked for a taste of a beer and was told he had to pay for it by putting something in the charity box. We’ve never heard of this before. The girl serving behind the bar wasn’t very friendly and the whole ambience of the place was austere. I was put off by the slug trails on the back of the seat at the next table. There are much better pubs in Coniston itself, about 100 yards along the road.

We arrived as hotel guests in this rather confused but quirky pub/hotel. As a family it is close to the lake and the highlights of Coniston which is a jewel. Rooms and views are excellent. You are greeted by the bar boss who simply tosses a key over the bar and you’re in.

We were there the weekend of a World Cup match so there were a lot of people around. Bar staff are friendly if a little dry which is the way in these parts. Food, although a little pricey, is lovely. I kind of liked how, if you wanted to move outside, you had to move your own cutlery etc. A kind of ‘get on with it’ informality that you either get or don’t.

There’s not much to do with kids on site as this is primarily a pub. I might have been unlucky but I didn’t have a decent pint there all weekend - the pub down the hill had better beers so this is something The Sun could work on. Still - a kind of mixed bag of a place but I have to say it was good fun and memorable - how often can you say that about hotels these days?

Will return again!

Went for early meal on Saturday 14th July. After reading previous reviews wasn’t sure what to expect. Service good, lovely setting and food excellent. Will definitely call again when in the area. One point two chickens wandering around and came into the conservatory while eating not particularly good practice. Would recommend.

We stayed for two nights and found the Sun Inn much improved from our stay a few years ago. The staff were really helpful and food great. We ate in both evening and the breakfast was also very tasty and freshly prepared. The beer was well kept and there are lovely views of Coniston and the surrounding hills. The only Inn up the hill and well worth the short walk up, especially for a pint of Lowswater Gold.

After reading the recent terrible reviews we were interested to visit. Found the staff to be delightful and friendly. Plenty of choice on the interesting menu for vegetarians .Food was well cooked and nicely presented. Just goes to show .
