“Fantastic views, plenty of space and great location”

I echo all the comments from previous reviewers, so will not simply repeat them. Easy to find, very close to Keswick, but Derwent Lea and Applethwiate seems a world apart from the bustling town. You must like the countryside and animals to stay here, with pigs to make friends with, sheep everywhere, rabbits in the garden. Pleasant local walks right from the property, and if energetic straight up Skiddaw too which is right behind the property. . There is a small private spa / gym within a mile or so where you can pay day rates (its mainly a timeshare place). No pub nearby but you can walk into Keswick from here on a mixture of quiet roads and footpaths. The owner is very helpful and takes care not to intrude. A minor criticism is that after my first attempt, we were not happy to use the bath, it was uncomfortable to be in, its is deep but quite short, and the hot tap half way along the side could not be used when you are in the bath for fear of scalding (you can't get out of the way). However the downstairs shower was fine so we just used that. I would not hesitate to return, we had a great holiday here.

A short distance but a million miles away from crowded streets of Keswick and other Leke Districf towns and attractions. If you are a walker, this is a perfect base from which to exercise your passion. If you like to read, there is no better spot for it than the bench in front of the house. We rented a car, but another time might consider using taxis. It likely would be no more expensive than a rental.

We have no hesitation in recommending Derwent Lea to others.

“Amazing views”
Reviewed 29 March 2013 for a stay in March 2013

Just spent a weekend here with family. A good spacious house in an amazing location with fantastic views of the fells. We were there on a very cold snowy weekend. We did have a problem with the boiler which kept going out but started at the touch of a button. The owner was aware & did warn us about it & did apologise. We woke up to a leak in the kitchen coming from the bathroom also which was a bit of a nuisance but the owner did repair it when we were there so did not disrupt us too much & to be fair he gave us £40 back for the inconvenience. We got the coal fire going in the lounge which warmed us up! Plenty of space to relax & unwind. Upstairs bathroom great but downstairs shower room cold & could do with a bit of tarting up. Great value for money at £390 for a 3 night break.
