“lovely, quiet place suiting disbility and with carers organised”

We travelled with my elderly mother who has dementia and reduced physical mobility. She loved her downstairs shower room and bedroom as well as the rise and recline chair in the lounge. We loved the wood fire which made the lounge so welcoming and all the facilities were great, and we loved our bedroom with en-suite (with double bath and large shower)

We made full use of all the extras offered. I had a long tiring drive to get there, so requested a meal to warm up when we arrived, which was so welcome.

We also asked you to arrange carers to come and support Mum and that worked wonderfully to help us all to have a holiday. The carers (Saving Grace) were fantastic, and all the arrangements worked so smoothly, Thank you.

The location, while secluded, was not far from Bassenthwaite water and Keswick. We also visited Maryport, Lake Windermere and toured a lot along the edge of lakes and among the mountains (or large hills).

we did not make use of all the games and DVDs available, but appreciated the fact they were there, and we had no children with us, but there was lots for children to do

I would highly recommend the Old Chapel for any family, but if you have anyone with additional needs it is excellent

Liked best: the ground floor bedroom with ensuite large wet-room shower, and the wood-burner

“A fabulous and well-equipped cottage”
Reviewed January 5, 2015 for a stay in December 2014

We spent Christmas week at the Old Chapel in Ireby and had a wonderful time. The cottage is beautifully presented and had been decorated for Christmas. It is quiet and peaceful and we had everything we needed to cook Christmas dinner. The owner Rebecca has very helpful and made sure that we were reunited with the Christmas presents we managed to leave behind. The cottage is ideally positioned for the lakes and there are great local amenities in Wigton, Carlisle and Cockermouth.

“Spacious, light, homely, cosy”
Reviewed November 2, 2014 for a stay in October 2014

We were pleasantly surprised on our arrival of the Old Chapel! We'd read good reviews so our expectations were high but it certainly was as expected! The whole place was kitted out very well, we hardly had to bring anything with us, no need for linen, towels, toilet rolls, kitchen utensils etc as they were all supplied! The location is quite far north however there's still a lot to do and see around the area. Ireby is a lovely quiet little village and relatively easy to get to. There were six of us staying but the old chapel was big enough to give us all enough space!

Only a couple of pointers which I wanted to mention was the double mattress on the bed on the mezzanine floor is very hard. To save our backs as we were staying for the next week, we pulled the single mattress down from the top bunk and filled out the rest of the double space with cushions and blankets that were provided, covering the whole thing in a sheet. This worked ok at least it was comfier, but the bed is very creaky and creaked every time you turned over unfortunately! However we still slept OK. Also the water in the upstairs bathroom runs cold after two or so showers and two attempts at a bath through the week resulted in a luke warm puddle so we all had to use the downstairs shower. BUT in comparison to the rest of the chapel and what it had to offer they were a pretty minor couple of problems.

Thank you to the owners; overall we had a lovely stay!

Many thanks for taking the time to review The Old Chapel. It is nice to hear that The Old Chapel lived up to your expectations and you enjoyed your time there.

I was disappointed to read you had struggled with the double at the bottom of the bunk bed. I must admit I had never really considered it would be used as an adult double bed but more as a child's bed. I realise I had not made this clear in my description so will do so in the future.

The lack of hot water is a problem that I have not encountered before and can only suggest that the fire had not done it's job in heating the water sufficiently. It is a tank system and unfortunately when the tank is empty it does take some time to reheat that tank. I am sorry you didn't get your deep bath and, if you visit again, I will make sure the water is hot and plentiful so you can enjoy a bath while gazing at the stars.

Best wishes Rebecca

Liked best: Everything was perfect
Liked least: Nothing really other than it was a pity that the local pub was closed and up for sale. However it just meant we stayed in and enjoyed the log burning stove.

“Lovely house and great location”
Reviewed August 7, 2014 for a stay in August 2014

This is in the North of the Lake District so you need to know which part you want to be visiting. We find the busyness around Windermere and the expensive places there a real turnoff, the north is much quieter and still has so much to see and do.

The house is excellent and finished to a very high standard, especially the kitchen. We were there for two weeks and ate in virtually every evening, which saved a lot of money, which we spent on excellent ingredients we bought from farm shops and other places. The Cocklade farm shop on the A66 was excellent as was the Cranstons on the way to Carlisle ( not very far north maybe about 7 miles).

The Booths supermarket in Keswick is very good with lots of nice things.

We did lots of activities with Keswick Climbing Wall, Newlands Adventures and Rookin House including climbing, archery, kayaking, horse riding and clay pigeon shooting. We also did Wayfarer sailing with Nichol End Marina ( very good value for £45 for 3 hours).

We spent a very happy 2 weeks at the old chapel and would highly recommend it.

“A Special Place!”
Reviewed July 24, 2014 for a stay in July 2014

We have an unusual family! Two little kids and two grown up kids and a permanent wheel chair using Daddy! Finding a place , not only big enough for the 6 of us , but one that accommodates a disabled person and isn't ugly - is a major undertaking! However The Old Chapel ticks all the boxes, beautiful property, so well planned and renovated. A sheer delight, quiet but central enough for tourist activities! Already booked for next year! Well done Fraser and Rebecca!

“Beautiful setting”
Reviewed May 27, 2014 for a stay in May 2014

The Old chapel is a unique and beautiful place to stay. Arriving on a cold and wet day it was nice to be able to have the wood burner blazing within minutes of us getting there. We used this loads and it warmed the place beautifully - there was ample fuel provided too. The garden was a particular delight and both myself and my grandson loved it . the old chapel gave us plenty to smile about, we enjoyed our stay and would recommend the old chapel to anyone who is looking for a tranquil place to stay.
