I like to think of myself as a bit of a foodie, and first stayed at Holbeck when it held a star. It’s a couple of years since they lost the star, and they are so very close to getting it back... it’s the little things that let it down.

First off, our room was lovely .. room 23, with a nice seating area and double aspect views. It seemed a little odd that the lady who took us to our room said that the “turn down” service would be at 6:15pm, who wants their bed turning down at that time? Dinner wasn’t book in until 8pm (in the hotel restaurant), so they must have realised we would be in the room (we declined this service). In the past the staff came into your room when you were at dinner, turned down the bed, left a hot water bottle, and fresh water by the bed - to me, these are the touches that make somewhere special.
The main issue was with diner - not the food, the food was exceptionally good, I have eaten in 2 star places, and this was on a par. What let it down was the service - we waited quite some time to order, our bottle of wine was taken from the table, but, no-one came to top the glasses up and I had to ask, the main courses were put down on the table with no explaining (in fact, the guy didn’t even make eye contact), and we were not offered coffee at the end of the meal (we had to order it). It felt as though they were lacking a Maitre‘d to manage the floor, there was no feeling of ownership on the tables, it was just small things like the wait staff not introducing themselves. If they are hoping to get the star back, the service needs sorting. Breakfast was better, there was a young woman there who seemed to be managing the floor very well. Breakfast was fab, by the way.
Location is stunning, and the house itself is beautiful - I prefer the lounge in its new location, but it was cold, and the fire wasn’t lit.
One last thing, if you end up sat in the window seat at dinner, it’s cold on your back .

Dear theboltonwanderer,
We highly appreciate your feedback with reference to your recent stay and I would like to thank you for your kind comments accordingly. Our Restaurant Manager, Tom Husted, has only joined us 2 weeks ago and no doubt he will put his stamp on the "attention to detail" points in no time. We have discussed your comments with the entire restaurant staff in last night's briefing as I do not recognise certain aspects of the service you mentioned so it seemed best to share this with all staff concerned to make sure the comments are taking on board and dealt with accordingly. The fire is normally lit I have to admit we are just dealing with a "maintenance" issue in this respect and hope to have this re-instated in due time.
Having discussed your comment about Turn down service as well with our Head Housekeeper I was rather surprised at your comment as in normal conditions we would not start turn down as from 7pm onward and only when the guests are sitting down in the restaurant for dinner.
I would like to thank you though for your feedback as it helps us to make sure we adjust our standards and services there and than when needed.

I have stayed twice in this hotel, both in Miss Tiggy Winkle which has a mezzanine level with spiral staircase and many different seating areas. The room is stunning but was disappointed the Jacuzzi bath wasn't working and wasn't mentioned. We had a stunning lunch the retired to our room. Once changed into our robes we sat (Mum and Daughter) watching the world go by on the lake with ever changing lights over a glass of champagne and talked for England. The décor of the room is stunning with a fashionable country theme, antiques and generous size. The grounds are stunning too and includes a waterfall and brilliantly designed BBQ area

Room Tip: Views and grounds are stunning, great for photographs

Dear Nik S,
Thank you for your feedback and kind comments regarding your stays which we highly appreciate although not exactly sure about the condition of the Jacuzzi, which is working fine but looking at your heading that explains it.

Fantastic luxury, dog friendly hotel. We stayed for two nights over the weekend, and everything was perfect. The staff were welcoming to us and our little dog, and they couldn't do enough for us. The food is divine and our room was gorgeous.

Stayed for 2 nights, 2 couples with 3 tired out dogs. The rooms were very good with exceptional views of the lake and no feeling of them being 'dog rooms'. Following a catastrophic meal at a nearby restaurant on our first night, we returned to the cosy fire in the hall (dogs allowed in) to have cheese and bread with a few drinks. The highlight of our stay was the meal in the restaurant on the second night. Every mouthful was sublime and a credit to the chef. We have stayed before and will definitely be back.

I took 20 friends and family here to celebrate a special birthday at the end of January. The house is unique - an arts and crafts gem with the most stunning location. The staff really care and were excellent throughout. Ben, Emma, Nigel and Caherine (through the booking process and beyond) were responsive, kind, helpful and could not do enough to help out. The celebratory dinner for 20 in the Oak Room was done with real elan and style. The room looked stunning and wowed all our guests. So a huge thank you Holbeck Ghyll. This is a country house hotel - not the Four Seasons so yep the bathrooms are not wall to wall silken marble. But it has a soul.

Room Tip: Rooms 1 and 4 are stunning
