“Lovely!”
Reviewed 30 October 2011

We stayed in Room 1 last week for 2 Nights. A lovely, comfortable clean room with a great spa bath. Breakfast delicious and owners helpful and friendly. The hotel is perfectly positioned; a short walk into Bowness or Windermere, both with plenty of shops and restaurants. We walked down to Lake Windermere and took the boat to Ambleside. Well worth a visit, I wish we could have stayed longer, and we hope to go back! Kate and Darren

We have just returned from a 3 night break for our wedding anniversary. We read all the reviews prior to booking and were looking forward to arriving for a peaceful break. Unfortunately when we arrived (at the correct check-in time), there was no one there to greet us and we had to ring a mobile number and wait a short while until they came back to let us in.

Our weekend was without complaint as there was nothing bad about the Ivythwaite, however it didn't live up to our expectations based on the reviews and our previous experiences of other guest houses/B&B's of a similar price/rating in the same area.

Other reviewers had commented upon the warm welcome and friendliness of the hosts. We only really dealt with Mick who was very pleasant. We only saw his partner Wendy once on the first morning when we exchanged a very brief 'hello'. It wasn't until the morning of our departure that we had any significant conversation with Mick during breakfast.

The breakfasts were of very good quality ingredients and were nice but nothing overly special. We requested more toast one morning as we only had 1 slice each which we felt wasn't really enough. I'm not a big eater on a morning and asked for fried egg on toast and was given 1 very small slice of toast with 1 fried egg but even for me this wasn't enough to set me up for the day. With the extra toast requested we would have liked some jam but there was only a choice of honey or marmalade, neither of which I like! We also had to order what we wanted for breakfast the night before. We have never had to do this anywhere else and were not sure why this was necessary when there are only a few rooms to cater for. I prefer to choose on the morning as I don't know what I will want 12 hours before!!

Our room was the Great Gable Attic room which was pleasant and spacious. There was a large spa bath in the (slightly dated) en-suite bathroom. We used this on the first night and when we switched it on the bubbles were so violent we had to switch it off! There didn't seem to be any different settings although there was a +/- button that didn't do anything when you pressed it! The room was comfortable and clean and a real plus was that there was a good sized fridge in the room. Wine glasses and a corkscrew were provided which was a nice touch.

Most places we have stayed in the past have also had an information book in the room which we didn't have here. There was no information on contacting the hosts if needed, or what time to check out. The hotel advertises free wi-fi but we weren't given the code. There were some leaflets and walking maps in the downstairs entrance.

One day when we were there the weather was terrible and as we had had a late night we decided to stay in the room and get some extra sleep after breakfast. There was no 'do not disturb' sign to display on the door so we locked the door and turned the key in the keyhole to stop anyone coming in. Unfortunately this didn't work and poor Mick ended up walking in to find us in bed!!! He was very apologetic and we reassured him not to worry about it but a simple door hanger would have prevented the error!!

We didn't seem to have any control over the heating in the room and at times we were a little chilly.

We didn't make any complaint about anything during our stay as it really didn't warrant that, but although it was a pleasant stay, it could have been so much nicer with just a few simple changes. If I could I would rate it 3.5/5

In response to this review Mick & I would like to say we are sorry that we didn't meet expectations on this occasion. Comments made in all reviews good and negative are made always from an entirely unique point of view and experience of a guests stay so just a short response back from our selves.
Mick was only working in the car park for a short period of time that afternoon a number was left just incase some one should arrive at the front of the house.
Oopps! yes poor Mick always ready for the clean did unlock and walk into the bedroom a key in the lock would have prevented this or perhaps a word prior that they were in sorry !!. Info along with wifi access was missed but is available to all rooms. A breakfast request for an Egg on toast was responded with an Egg on toast, more toast is always available we love good apertites! I'm touched my presence was missed I do tend to be in the engine room a lot while Mick is front of house he gets all the lime light, well he's good at it.
We try hard to accommodate to all needs and enjoy doing so however it seems you can't please everyone but we always give it a damn good try! Wendy & Mick

My partner and I stayed here for 2 relaxing nights in the beautiful Skiddaw room. The room was very spacious and clean, housing a lovely comfortable four poster bed. The en suite bathroom comprised a twin airbath & shower facilities which added to the overall luxury feel of the accommodation.
Both my partner and I really enjoyed the cooked breakfast, especially the bacon, which set us up for the day nicely.
The logde is situated in an ideal location for exploring Windemere and Bowness by foot or by car.
The guest house is well maintained and has a nice homely feel, which is reflected by the welcoming nature of Mick and Wendy.
The next time we visit the lakes we will be staying here again most definitely as the value for money is second to none.

Stayed here for a weekend break in the Great Gable Suite - room located in the converted loft part of the building.
Lovely room - nice and big, 2 chairs, settee, TV/DVD, ipod dock, hairdrier, fridge, drink facilities etc.
Excellent super king sized bed - had a really good nights sleep (even without beer one night). Set back from the main road so should be guaranteed a completely quiet, peaceful nights rest.
Spa bath big enough for 2.
Lovely garden - wish it was a little sunnier while we were there, would be ideal for a spot of quiet relaxation.
Parking no problem, plenty available right outside.
Breakfast excellent - 4 or 5 choices, full english used good quality ingredients, scrambled eggs and salmon certainly wasn't a stingy portion. Usual selection of cereals, toast, jams, yoghurts, juices & a very nice fruit salad.
Great location - pretty much right in the middle between Windermere and Bowness, a nice 10-15 mins stroll to either.
Plenty of places to eat, drink nearby - providing it's fine I can't see the need for taxi's.
You can get the boat/cruise from Bowness into Ambleside for a nice day out - takes around 30 mins for just under £10 return. Only about a mile walk into Ambleside centre from the boat drop off - a shuttle bus service available if you don't fancy the walk.
Orrest Head well worth it - a 20 mins walk to a fantastic viewing point, giving you 360 degree panoramic views of the Lake, Morecambe Bay & plenty of other hills/mountains etc. Starting point up the top of Windermere, near the train station and tourist information centre - just call in there & they'll happily point you in the right direction. We walked from Ivythwaite up through Windermere then up Orrest & it probably only took a hour and a half to get back to the hotel, including 20 mins or so enjoying the views.
Would recommend this as a short break to anyone.

Fab place, good facilities and lovely rooms with spa bath too. Excellent breakfast with huge portions which my husband enjoyed!! Lovely gardens too with friendly owners and lovely Labrador. We really enjoyed it and it's in a great spot just between Windermere and Bowness. There are plenty of places to eat and drink here as well as the breathtaking scenery and tourist attractions. Go here you won't regret it. We loved it!

Our second stay at the Ivythwaite. My husband and I stayed for one night in Great Gable - beautiful attic room, very tastefully done. Bathroom had a large spa bath which was fabulous. Toiletries provided. Very quiet room, bed extremely comfortable, so had a great nights' sleep. The room had a fridge which was a nice touch. Plenty of supplies of tea, coffee etc. The owners, Mick and Wendy are very friendly, and take time to talk to you. Breakfast was amazing! Thank you for a wonderful stay, we will be back soon!
