“Better than average but not quite very good”
Reviewed 11 April 2012

I've given the hotel a "Very Good" rating as it's nearer this than "Average". I stayed here on a Sunday evening and arrived at 8pm. Check in was pretty speedy, although there was a small computer error. I'd booked a guaranteed Thames view room and, given the size of the windows (as you can see from the photo). The room was modern and large with a lovely bathroom but, and this may have just been us, we really struggled with the lighting and air con. Perhaps on being shown to your room it would be good to be shown how to work them as they do differ a little from the norm.

The bed was very comfy so full marks for this, however we did find the room a little noisy and it seemed to make random noises which woke both of us up a couple of times. Also, we were on the 1st floor and is just above a walkway (so a man got a bit of a shock when I opened the curtains in the morning!) - I'd suggest to the hotel that they use rooms on this floor last (however they may already do this as I'm unsure if the hotel was full)

As you can see from my photos the view of the Thames isn't quite as nice in the day (but that's hardly the fault of the hotel)

The hotel isn't ideally located for the tube or train, however the hotel does publicise this and offers a free shuttle to and from both the nearest tube and train stop.

All in all I recommend this hotel, it's very reasonably priced for London (especially given the size of the rooms) and I like the modern desin and eco-friendliness (although I do agree with the comments from the previous review by Oxcat1 that there are areas they could improve upon with their eco-friendliness)

And finally... there was a small box of chocolates and birthday card waiting in the room on arrival, which was a nice gesture and much appreciated.

I stayed here as part of their 'soft opening' phase. Overall, it is a great hotel - large rooms, well designed with lots of quirky features and attention to detail. However, I wish they'd carried their much-trumpeted Eco philosophy through a little more thoroughly. For example, why is the tea and coffee in the room not fair trade and organic? Why is the milk long-life commercial UHT, rather than organic and preferably fresh? None of the products in the fridge were organic either, and the room service menu didn'r seem to make any nod towards local and/or seasonal products. It seems slightly as though they have only adopted the Eco philosophy when it works in their favour, I.e. no complimentary toiletries and few towels, to reduce waste, but no support of local businesses or fair trade farmers. A good start, but easily improved.

Dear guest,
We thank you for choosing Hotel Rafayel yet again and for your comments in this forum regarding your recent stay with us.
With regard to your comments of the hotel’s eco-friendly policies we wish to update all our readers in this forum on the following.
1. Unique Philips-designed lighting schemes with energy saving light bulbs 100% throughout the hotel.

2. VDA Micromaster and room automation technology that monitors hotel and individual guest’s electrical consumption which helps to control and maintain energy saving and reduce costs.

3. Energy management ventilation and air-conditioning systems (Daikin Air-conditioning and Coleman Modicum Ventilation) – a state of the art transfer systems that circulates outside air into guest rooms, over and above which intra heat transfer from differing temperature zones to optimize electricity usage has been implemented.

4. Air-conditioning and ventilation are centrally controlled and programmed for regulated temperatures between 18-22° C if occupied. These systems eliminate the need for towel dryers as the exhaust heat and air extraction through the bathrooms are utilized to dry towels. In the event a room becomes vacant, the heater/AC is turned off.

5. Creation of additional landscape in external areas on the ground floor, rooftop, and wherever possible.

6. Hotel’s shuttle fleet is composed of SEAT hybrid vehicles which are used to transport guests to and from London’s Westend.

7. All-organic and natural products in the spa, guestrooms and public areas.

8. Water technologies incorporated to reduce water consumption, like rainwater harvesting recapturing it from hotel’s terraces.

9. Plant irrigation using captured rainwater.

10. Power showers in all bathrooms to reduce water consumption.

11. “No plastic” policy – using glass recycled refillable bottles, 200ml bottles instead of 20ml plastics save nearly 500,000 plastic bottles a year and 400-500 1-litre water bottles served in our restaurant saves 200,000, in all eliminating about 205 tonnes of glass bottled waste for disposal. All of this is achieved in-house with Vivreau Bottling technology.

12. Usage of eco-friendly drycleaners.

13. Recyclable “Hypnos” beds in every room.

14. With our “No-Paper” policy, electronic newspapers are offered throughout the hotel.

15. We recycle all glass and paper used by the hotel and its guests.

In the last year, Rafayel has sustained its policies and continues to explore technology and systems that can be further incorporated to reduce our carbon footprint, which is easier because it will not entail structural changes, which means better improved product at low or no-cost! In this respect we continue to identify modern cutting-edge innovative systems (like use of solar power) to continue making a bigger and better difference in our own way, and set an example to other businesses.

We have so far not only succeeded in significantly reducing our carbon footprint with limited consumption of energy, water, food and corresponding costs through efficiencies highlighted in the above, but have been able to raise environmental awareness across a broad spectrum of people – staff, guests, and our neighborhood.

Our efforts have been recognized by the local council and we were awarded with the following at the Wandsworth Green Business Awards 2011.

1. Carbon Reduction Achievement - Runner up
2. Best Green Business/Team - Runner up
3. Best Environmental Innovation - Winner
4. Green Business Champion - Winner

We have come a long way since our inception, and are currently conducting another energy audit in our efforts to do even better and contribute more towards the environment.

Thank you for your review and we look forward to welcome you again in the near future

Best Regards

Chris de Saram

The idea is to bring the hotel to a 5-stars standard. So, the rooms are great, very nicely decorated, with space which is rare to find in London... All is OK except for the staff who is still learning. They try and work hard lo launch the hotel. As they are aware that the service is not perfect (compared to a 5*), they offer you very good prices. (!!! the service may not be perfect but the staff is so nice, respectful and friendly... At the end, it's all that matters !!!).
Great rooms, quality of services to improve but very good prices... It's a win win deal.
The location is perfect on the left bank. But you need a car. The terrace is also very enjoyable.
I love this place.

Room Tip: Be sure to have a room with a view on the Thames. I don't remember if all the rooms have one. D...

I know, I know, of course there are places in London that are better than this, but for the value, im not so sure!

I took my partner away for an easter break (before easter!) and we stayed in one of the Nile suites for one ngith. If you phone up you can either request a room with a view of the Thames or a Jacuzzi. I went with the Jacuzzi as it still had a partial view of the Thames and it was a lovely view at that so dont be put off by the "partial view".

The room was something to behold, a large wooden door with a glass panel to put your card against which in turn opens the door into the "reception" area of the room we had (room 104) you have a large wardrobe on your right (with hangers, hair drier, safe, slippers etc) and to the left of the wardrobe is the mini-bar. A nice little touch was the desk on the left side of the reception which is where you find the keyboard for the internet TV and an iPod dock for your music that can be listened to throughout the whole room (including bathroom)

On our left was a huge, comfy queen sized bed with some of the comfiest pillows my head has had the pleasure of bedding down on! 42" LCD TV in front of the bed (hanging from the ceiling) with a good selection of freeview channels and the ability to control the air-con and the lights in the room (a very good, maybe lazy touch!)

To the right when you enter is the large bathroom with massage shower, huge square rain head shower, "his and hers" sinks, toilet and the luxury, touch controlled jacuzzi with remote controlled TV in the wall. The jacuzzi has a few nice touches and settings including a light which pulses under the water while you relax (I had a nice time relaxing on a sunday morning!). I also had a shower the night before we went out which was just as good and refreshing, if im honest.

Around the corner from the bedroom was the dining room / lounge area with a nother 42" LCD TV but this room was not used, just admired!

The staff and service was very attentive and allowed us to stay an hour later at no extra cost and even left us a card and chocolates on the house. The only gripe i have is that i had reservations for 09:30 at covent garden and someone from the restaurant opposite had parked in front of me after the valet had parked my car out front - but this was not the hotels fault and they swiftly tracked down the owner and i got our - much to my disappointment i had to change my reservation to accomodate my 30 minutes of being late.

the location is clearly stated on the website and i knew i was going to be better off driving my car but the location didnt put me off. I was annoyed when people complained about this as it clearly lays out everything you need to know on the website.

I would love to come back and stay at this hotel and i have a very strong feeling i will.

Thanks again to all the staff who were helpful throughout all the phone calls and email correspondance before and during the stay. top class.

Room Tip: Room 104 has a jacuzzi and partial view of the Thames

Me my girlfriend and parents stayed here for 1 night before our flight to las Vegas.
The hotel is excellent, the staff were very friendly and we couldn't ask for more. We just wished we could of spent more time at the hotel but as we had a show booked and was leaving early the next morning we didn't spend a lot of time here.
However we did use the steam sauna and jacuzzi which all were really nice.
The hotel is right on the river aswell which Is an excellent location.
People who moan about the location are being very petty, the hotel even puts on a free car to take you to tube or train station which we used.
We will be returning to the hotel rafayel and hope to spend more time at the hotel and use more of what this excellent hotel has to offer.
Thank you rafayel for making the start to our holiday a memorable one
Glen

Room Tip: Try for a room with river facing

This is definitely in my list of top hotels in England. It was exceptionally good value for money and the rooms unlike many hotels are huge and beautifully decorated. The rooms are tasteful and luxurious, not a boutique hotel done on the cheap! Staff are all really friendly and make you feel very special.
The only disappointment was the restaurant which has stunning views but the food was very bland. Worth having a morning coffee or afternoon glass of wine though as looking out over the Thames is lovely.
