I was lucky enough to see James Cordon and the original cast at the Adelphi before they transferred to America. What a great show. Very slick, amusing and you are not sure if some of the jokes are intended and part of the script or ad libbed. A packed auditorium and a standing ovation

Whether it's a classic play or contemporary work, we've never been less than stimulated and thrilled by the choice of play, the direction, the acting and the production values.

The 2012 She Stoops to Conquer is / was a dream of a production. So was Henry IV Pt 1 with Michael Gambon as Falstaff. And the Revenger's Tragedy. And a fascinating contemporary play we saw four years ago. And a Gorky play I caught a few years ago...

Excellent accoustics and a brilliant stage. I doubt if there would be a seat in the house that doesn't have a good view.

If you do only one backstage tour when in London, do this one at the National Theatre on the Southbank.

Taken through the labyrinth of corridors that lead to the stages of the Lyttelton, Olivier and Cottesloe auditoria....you'll spy sets sitting in waiting as they are literally set aside waiting to be used again (the National is a rep theatre so plays switch around during the season), be taken into each audiotorium where they may be deconstructing a set that day, through where sets are built...and told many a tale...before being lead onto one the stages from the wings to take in the view from the actors' perspective. In our tour's case, it was the shabby Dublin chic of Juno and the Paycock but we also saw up very close the set for the The Veil.

And in the props area, we got to examine at close quarters a horse designed for War Horse, but not used (Joey's mother) and many smaller props...such as food (as the really stuff would just wilt under lights!).

The tours are run daily and are about 1 1/2 hours long. Ours had about 25 people on it...which was about large enough for the guide to handle. It is recommended to book online before you arrive.
