“Best of the best in London”
Reviewed 3 June 2012

We arrived at the Montague at 6.00am after a long flight from Singapore. Our room was not available however we were offered an upgrade (Junior Suite) by an extremely pleasant receptionist (Natasha) and it was worth every dollar/pound. Nothing was too much trouble - the staff at this hotel are extraordinarily pleasant and helpful and we were continually surprised at the attitude of these folk......thank you so much all of you.

I understand this hotel has recently been renovated - well, it's a renovation that is beyond description - exquisitely tasteful and a credit to whoever was responsible.

The location: perfect! About 1 minute's walk from the British Museum - I'm only sorry I didn't have time to spend all day and the next exploring.

Thank you Montague for everything - it was the best of the best of our accommodations on our travels. You deserve to be higher than No. 10 in London :-)

Room Tip: The junior suite was roomy and very, very comfortable. I just can't think of anything negative...

this is the second time my wife and I have been here, when i asked her what she wanted for her birthday a stay at the Montague was her answer, I emailed them and ordered a bottle of champagne for our room on arrival, then about 1/2 hour later we also had a card and a box of biscuits from the manager, later that evening in the bar when we were having Drinks she had a mini cheese cake, ice cream with a candle from the restaurant Manager. When we got into the room there was a balloon and cake, all the staff are very friendly and can not do enough for you. Rooms are clean, tea and coffee restocked during the day, and in the evening when you return to your room to find the beds turned down and a small treat on the pillows. great food..highly recommended,We will be back again soon

Stayed here for our silver wedding anniversary. The hotel decor and ambiance were superb, not too modern and minimalistic like a lot of boutique hotels can be, but warm and sumptuous. The hotel was not too large to be impersonal and the service was excellent. We had afternoon tea which was lovely. We also had dinner one evening which was pretty average for the price (approx £90 for two courses with only one of us having one glass of wine, and two liqueur coffees). My pork was dry so I couldn't eat it all - I mentioned this to the waiter and they offered a free dessert. Bar prices were also steep - service charge was added to the tab and the tab was left open for tips as well. However, don't let this put you off - just eat somewhere else, the hotel experience itself was wonderful and well worth the money, and it was worth paying the bar prices to sit in such a comfortable, relaxing bar. Overall the hotel was not expensive for the quality (and lots of extras such as bathrobes, slippers, free internet) and very conveniently located. We will certainly stay here every time we go to London - fantastic, many thanks!

Room Tip: Ask for a room overlooking the gardens

We regularly stay at the Montague, and as always, fantastic in every way. The staff are wonderful. We stayed before and after a trip to California I mentioned to the reception that we were going for our anniversary and a family Wedding. Following our holdiay, when we returned, we were upgraded and they had placed fruit and chocolates in the room, that evening, the turn down service had decorated the room with rose petals. It was lovely.
Excellent, as always.

We are delighted returning customers to the Montague; indeed, over the years, it has become our London "home." And we are pleased to say that she just keeps getting better! This visit we noticed a new lift and HVAC system. Also in discussion with the General Manager Dirk Crokaert, I learned that all the rooms have now been upgraded; this upgrade has been going on for some time, and early reviewers indicate staying in some of the less-than-expected rooms.
While many of the rooms are smallish, they are well-appointed, with much attention given to detail. When we travel for pleasure, we try to contain costs, so we opt for the smaller rooms; however, the staff are delighted to remove extraneous furnishings to make way. Also, they are pleased to store extra luggage during our stay.
A special thanks and cheer for Jorge and Mustafa, easily the best concierges in all of London! They are joyous and delightful while fully and completely professional; they extend their reach to assist tired travelers and whacky tourists alike.
Additional benefits: location across the street from the British Museum and its situation on a quiet (relatively) Bloomsbury street.
When we stay, we often take friends, and they, too, return.
We just love the care that the staff takes of the hotel and its guests. Indeed, on one morning, M. Crokaert himself was clearing breakfast dishes. Now THAT's service and dedication!

Room Tip: Book early for best deals. If money is no object, go for one of the Bloomsbury rooms. They are abso...

This is the 6th time we have stayed at The Montague on the Gardens, having just returned from a weekend there staying on 26 May for a theatre break with 2 other couples. We have previously stayed as a couple, with our young children and with friends. Each visit has been exceptional, from the moment you pull up outside the hotel which is on a quiet road in Bloomsbury opposite the British Museum. The hotel itself has a luxurious typically English Victorian feel to it, no modern minimalist look here, it is exceptionally clean in all areas, from the front entrance to the public toilets on the ground floor. On pulling up outside we are greeted by the extremely friendly concierge team who soon whisk our bags inside and our car away, the reception staff have always been professional, friendly and helpful. We have only ever stayed in the Master Suites at the hotel and can particularly recommend room 216 with its light and luxurious furnishings, the beds seem to stretch out forever and are amazingly comfortable, the bathrooms are fantastic with television, rain shower, dressing gowns, marble finishings and the rather cool 'lit' toilet! Canapes are delivered early evening, along with ice bucket to accompany drinks from the mini-bar, fruit bowl and a small box of home-made biscuits. After an evening out it is a delight to return to your room, where the curtains are drawn, lamps on, bed turned down with a pillow treat that varies each visit. We have eaten in the hotels restaurant and can highly recommend it for a beautiful evening meal, we have also experienced their afternoon tea which is gorgeous, various sandwiches, the best scones ever, and several cakes to finish, the tea experience is a delight with timers for each different type. We have also had afternoon tea with our two young children who were made to feel just as welcome with their own version of afternoon tea. Our last visit, one of our friends jokingly mentioned that a packet of crisps would go down a treat with the sandwiches and voila! within minutes the staff were back with a huge bowl of crisps, it is these tiny things that make staying here such an absolute pleasure.

Breakfast is a delight, with everything you can think off, the best scrambled eggs ever, and smiling, chatty friendly staff keen to make sure you have everything you wish.

The hotel itself is welcoming, comfortable and fulfills the requirements for a relaxing weekend being treated like you actually matter. The one thing that truly stands out from the crowd at the Montague on the Gardens is its staff, I cannot praise them highly enough, each and everyone of the staff members are friendly, helpful and truly seem to enjoy working to please the guests staying there. On returning from a day out they will always ask how your show was (always remembering what you were going to see), how was your meal, and after six visits they even remember our childrens names and ask how they are if they are not staying with us! On this visit a problem with a restaurant booking whilst we were out on a walking tour was soon solved with a quick phone call to the concierge Jorge, who within minutes called us back to tell us he had booked us another restaurant just round the corner from the hotel, quite amazing with little notice for a Saturday evening!

And there lies the key to the Montague on the Gardens, we return time after time for the pleasure of meeting its wonderful staff who actually care, no false smiles here, in particular Jorge the concierge with his marvellous sense of humour and ability to sort anything out, and Lucia who serves afternoon tea (and crisps) and always takes time to chat to us.

So, in summary, if you are looking for exceptional service above and beyond without the stuffiness of being a 4 star hotel, then you have to experience the Montague on the Gardens for yourselves. It is hard to express in this review just how amazing the staff are, they are a credit to the hotel, they are the main reason we return time after time and daren't stay anywhere else in London. If you do decide to stay there based on this review, please buy Jorge a Strawberry Frappucinno from Starbucks round the corner, we forgot this weekend and he deserves it!

My only wish for our visits to the Montague is to stay in the Guvnors Suite, having been shown round it, it even out-does the other rooms! One day....

Room Tip: Any master suite particularly on the second floor
