Owner description: Most of this iconic building was built in the mid-19th century following a devastating fire in 1834. Westminster Hall survived the fire and dates from 1097. Visitors can book tours through the House of Commons and the House of Lords, and are welcome to watch debates and committees when the Houses are sitting..

Visiting The Houses of Parliament is a splendid opportunity to appreciate the outward signs of a parliamentary democracy. Visitors can be seen, at times, meeting their local Member. The buildings are worth a visit and also can be viewed from he Thames.

I last visited the Palace of Westminster in a school party, more than 50 years ago! If you are a UK citizen it is easy to arrange a visit through your local MP.

Tours are escorted by very knowledgeable guides and take about 75 to 90 minutes. Providing there is no sitting taking place at the time of your tour, you get inside both the Commons and the Lords chambers which are remarkable places. The rest of the Palace is also beautiful, and beautifully kept, considering that it is a place of work for hundreds of people.

Westminster Hall, where your tour begins and ends is also pretty spectacular with the hammer-beam roof being the largest medieval timber roof in Northern Europe.
