“Wonderful place”
Reviewed February 22, 2017 for a stay in February 2017

Winchmore Hill is a wonderful place to stay. Very historic with fabulous places on the doorstep to dine at whether you fancy a light snack or a evening dinner, Winchmore Hill has it all. We booked Chalkies as we have family nearby and we were very impressed with this beautiful place. Our hosts took time to explain all the facilities this Gem of a place had to offer and immediately felt we were 'at home'. Why stay in a hotel when you can stay here ??

We were delighted to welcome these guests; it is always a pleasure to have relatives of local people staying with us. London property prices have become ridiculously high and so many people do not have sufficient room in their homes to accommodate visiting friends and family. Increasingly, we find that we are fulfilling a local need in this respect. We were glad that these guests had an opportunity both to enjoy time with their family and to enjoy our historic property.

Thank you for your kind good wishes. We hope you have a wonderful Christmas and New Year too. It was good to have you here to stay and very much hope you will come again.
We agree about the great park. Grovelands Park is one of my favorite places and the lake with its family of swans and cygnets is a delight each Spring. It's a bit chilly now in December, but still beautiful. We are so fortunate that London has kept many lovely open spaces.

“Really great place to stay just outside central London.”
Reviewed August 23, 2016 for a stay in August 2016

Our time at Chalkley's was very enjoyable. I am happy that I chose this rental for our time in London. The travel into all of the tourist/historical sites was very easy and took approximately 30 minutes via the overground train and then the tube. It was wonderful to have a safe haven to escape to after a busy day of site seeing. Nina, the proprietor was very helpful and kind. There was plenty of space to spread out in the apartment. Lastly, I loved having a fully geared kitchen to cook in each night. Perfect for the three of us!

We always pleased to hear that our guests have had a good time. This family included two daughters who were keen to see the Harry Potter experience, which is not hard to get to from here. We also give details of how to get to the main historic and tourist sites so that our guests do not waste holiday time doing their own route planning. London is a big city but the transport system is very efficient.
Having a good kitchen helps a lot when it comes to keeping down the cost of holiday catering for a family, although there are plenty of places to eat out around here if you wish.

“Be sure it's for YOU”
Reviewed July 6, 2016 for a stay in June 2016

After a two-week tour of England, Ireland, Scotland, and Wales (which was wonderful), we were looking forward to five days in one place, so we could tour London. Chalkley's is in a nice little town, but it would NOT be somewhere we would stay again. We knew about the steep stairs but did not comprehend that NO ONE could get a suitcase up those stairs, so our suitcases remained on the 1st floor, while the bedrooms and bathrooms were upstairs. We were supplied a variety of baskets to take things up and down the stairs. Because we are all in our seventies (four of us), we felt like our lives were in danger every time we went up or down those stairs. The kitchen, also on the 2nd floor, was well-stocked but very narrow; if you wanted to sit down to eat, then you had to go downstairs to the dining room or eat on your bed. It just wasn't very restful or convenient. However, IF you know about the "inconvenience" and it doesn't bother you, then you will find that this place has its own ambience because of its age, it's clean, and Nina and her son Bruce do everything they can to help you have a nice stay.

We are disappointed that these guests did not find the apartment suitable for their needs. The apartment is described accurately on all our website advertisements and we are always happy to discuss with potential guests any queries they might have before making a booking.
The staircase is, as it states in the description, a little narrower (80- 90 cms. wide) and a little steeper than you might find in a modern house; this is what is to be expected in an historic building. There are only 10 steps in the staircase.
Similarly, the kitchen is accurately photographed in our advertisement and is clearly NOT a kitchen-diner.
My husband and I are 73 years and 69 years respectively and we regularly use the stairs with no problem at all when cleaning or attending to the apartment, but obviously people's mobility varies greatly.
We are sorry that these guests found their large suitcases were a problem and would have helped if we had been informed. Normal sized suitcases are have never caused a problem.
While it is entirely reasonable for this reviewer to report her feelings about the accommodation, I have to challenge the suggestion that they felt "our lives were in danger". We are inspected annually by Visit Britain/ Quality in Tourism and have for a second year received a Gold Award to add to our 4-star grading . The inspection includes a Risk Assessment.
I would not want to deter any 70-year-olds (or older) from visiting us. If you are concerned please get in touch with us to discuss the suitability of the apartments to your needs. As the review kindly noted, Chalkleys has an ambience of its own because it is part of a listed historic building and we do everything we can to help you have a nice stay - as can be seen from the many 5* reviews we have received.

Nina was friendly, helpful and extremely organized. She responded straight away to all emails and inside the house there was plenty of info on the what/where/how etc of navigating London. We had small children so the requirement to have space, quiet and parks nearby was extremely important. Getting away from the hustle and bustle important but also being able to access the city just so. The overland train station taking you into King Cross was only 15 mins. The park nearby is sensational, with play equipment and plenty of walks plus a lake. There's a tube station 20 mins walk away too if you need. There's pubs, cafes, food markets, supermarkets, all within Koowee. We needed to hire a car for a week and we were helped to work out car parking. most days we had our car outside the house and if not then very close by. This house has it's kitchen/bedrooms/bathrooms up very narrow stairs, so novel for us but not good for moving impaired. The floors were topsy turvy. We did not enjoy the bed and this is very important for us as sleep is important, so it would be good for this to be up graded. The children's room was lovely with their own on suit too. Very tidy and great to have two living areas.

I am glad the children enjoyed the park (it is beautiful and was designed by the famous Humphrey Repton) and that the information we give our guests about London was helpful.
I am sorry these guests did not find the bed comfortable. The mattress is high quality one from John Lewis but of course mattresses are very much a personal choice. I will have another look at it and ask our next few guests to give me their comments. If they are not entirely happy about it I will of course replace it. Nina

The apartment is located very close to the next station and it is possible to reach central London in a very short time.
The location is very quiet and relaxing.
There are many shopping and dining opportunities in the area.
The apartment is well suited for 4 persons with its two bedrooms, each with own bathroom.
Nina is very friendly, provided us with some breakfast credentials for the first day and is very helpful if you have any questions.

All in all a very nice apartment which I would recomment to everyone.
