Description: This Spitalfields steakhouse has wooed much of London since opening in 2006; word-of-blog has only served to create an even bigger buzz around the restaurant and its food. A case of the emperor's new clothes? We think no.' Time Out Spitalfields was our first restaurant, and the general view is that it is where the 'Hawksmoor spirit' is best embodied - many of the staff have worked there for years and would never consider elsewhere. Great steaks, great drinks and an amazing atmosphere, full of people who desperately care whether you enjoy your evening. We are located just down the road from our namesake Nicholas Hawksmoor's Christ Church Spitalfields and 10 minutes walk from Liverpool Street, Old Street and Aldgate stations. It can accommodate 115 people for exclusive hire and the back section of the restaurant is ideal for groups of up to 55. The restaurant can be hired exclusively for a meat-fuelled party, corporate function and wedding receptions. For information on private hire and events, please contact our events department.

After some serious research into where to get the best steak in London, my sister and I decided after reading such great reviews that we would not be disappointed dining here. What a shame it let us down. The starter of marrowbone was meagre to say the least, barely a teaspoon of marrow and some toast for £6!! We ordered the rib-eye and although it was a good size and well cooked the flavour was no different to steak I've had in my local pub. For £28 each I really was expecting something special. Sides were a bit disappointing and again expensive, small dish of oily mac and cheese, the chips were OK but not incredible like some reviewers have said. We did share a lovely bottle of Domaine de Cabrials Pinot noir though! The final bill for lunch was enormous. If the meal had been amazing the price could be justified, but I just left feeling ripped off and a bit confused as to why it's so popular.

So said one of my guests......and yes I would e tempted to agree.

We arrived a little early for lunch and it felt a little awkward at first standing aimlessly in the bar area, but once we were shown to our table, let's say that the magic started.

Our waiter asked if this was our first time at the Hawksmoor. It was. He then took us through the menu prefacing it by saying "basically it's posh steak and chips". It's certainly is but what steak and mmmm what chips. Your local pub or Berni is not in the same league and to be frank neither is Gaucho!

Each of us ordered and then before our eyes a wonder of fillet steaks, rib eyes and baked cod appeared before us with chips (3 times fried so delightfully crispy) with an assortment of sides (spinach, mushrooms mmmmm). Wonderful, succulent and for the first time since we arrived our table fell silent. What better recommendation can there be for the Hawksmoor and it's food??

So in summary. Easy to find at the back of Old Spitalfields market about 10 mins walk from Liverpool. St station. Wonderful food and as stated in the title quiet possibly the best steak you will ever have!

We really enjoyed sharing the prime rib on the bone which was cooked perfectly and there was a buzzy atmosphere. This place is expensive though and sides are in addition to the price of the steak which is a bit mean. Great steak though so if that's your thing you'll love it.
