The front of House staff were adequate but lacking in charm.
The bento boxes looked pretty and well presented but assortment of goodies were but: the sashimi was chilled too much and therefore lacked taste; some of the garnishes looked dried out as if they had been placed several hours before serving; the wagu noodles were fine.
Admittedly are group all know Japan well and our expectations may have been too high but in an era when London has learnt what high end Japanese food should taste like this was a mediocre meal.

Engawa is a small restaurant with an open kitchen and a lot of staff working hard to prepare gorgeously presented dishes. The food didn't just look good, though, it was delicious. Service was excellent. Overall this was an excellent restaurant - just a little expensive.

Looked up the best "Japanese Wagyu Beef in London" and this place was on top of a lot of lists.

Although the place is small and has just a dozen tables it is very cosy.

The food is good but not exceptional (have had better Toro and better Wagyu). But it's definitely on the higher level of things.

Staff is helpful and the food presentation is great.

There are only set menus that you can choose from so you can't mix and match and order just the things that you like (hence not a 5 start rating).

Engawa, situated in Soho in front of the Ham Yard Hotel is a petite traditional Japanese restaurant.

It specialises mainly in Wagyu beef, however the sushi and sashimi are equally delicious. Furthermore I have found the presentation of the dishes to be quite unique.

In terms of food I would strongly recommend to have the 5 courses set menu, which includes the best tasting dishes.

If you like japanese food adjusted for more Western tastes, then perhaps it’s great. The sashimi is flourished with all sorts of stuff- unnecessary toppings that muddles the taste and supposed simplicity of a piece of sashimi or sushi nagiri. Perhaps it’s a means to mask the mediocre quality of the fish.
Otherwise the sake selection is good. And their miso beef soup was very good.

Pretty dishes, not so great taste.
