“Great place to stay”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 9 October 2011

I can not rate the Oast high enough. Terrific hosts very good clean bedroom and toilet/shower.
fresh fruit in room excellent breakfast both in choice & well cooked. Afternoon tea in lounge with home made cakes. I was even driven back to the station on the Sunday. Very good value all round. Will be returning.

Mel Massen

Room Tip: My room No1 was very good rear facing.

Friendly welcome to hot sweaty cyclists. Lovely clean room and excellent shower. Varied selection at breakfast inculding lots of fresh fruit and cooked breakfast.
They even managed to pass on a t shirt left by my husband to the tour leader who was collecting our lugage.

We stayed here for 2 nights before and after doing the 3 peaks.

I didn't give the owners any warning that we would want an early breakfast but they are clearly geared up for this and we came down before 6am on Sat to find home made cheese/ham croissants (which had smelt fab when we arrived the day before), home made muffins (which we ate at the top of Whernside later and were gorgeous) and the usual array of cereals/tea and coffee etc.

Tea and coffee making facilities were in a communal area, but this was not a problem, especially as it was always accompanied by an array of (yes you've guessed it) yet more home made cake. It's a good job we were burning it off by walking!

Our room faced the road, but there is little traffic at night and the double glazing kept any noise out, rooms were clean and comfortable and obviously recently redecorated, shower etc was all fine too.

Owners were very helpful and pointed us in the direction of the best place to go drinking in Settle (the social club) where we had a very entertaining night on the Sat after the walk.

Breakfast was again good, some oat/fruit/yoghurt concoction was really nice, I admit I could have managed another sausage, but that's only cos they were so good (award winning apparently and cos I'd walked 26 miles the day before).

Recommended and will def be back. A cut above the average B&B.

Thank you for the kind review it is much appreciated.
We are so glad that you enjoyed your stay and hope to see you again in the future.
Next time you stay ask for two award winning sausages! and also you don't have to climb the 3 Peaks to get the cake.
Thank you once again.

2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 19 July 2011

We arrived early in the morning with a request to leave some luggage whilst we travelled the Settle to Carlisle railway (which was rubbish / waste of a day), and I was greeted by a flustered host, who can’t seem to operate efficiently without her husband, who was called to work. However, she obliged to my request and we left our bags etc in the dining area – though not sure how secure they were?

We returned later that afternoon and this time we were greeted by her husband, who ushered us upstairs to our rooms. A good start as our bags had been taken to our accommodations, which were nice. My room consisted of two, reasonably comfortable, single beds (although I did request, and got confirmation for a double), a small table with tiny flat screen TV and a fruit platter (which looked a bit old), a bedside table with alarm clock, and a sitting chair (squashed into the corner under a sloped roof – not very functional) with an accompanying tiny table. Also within the room was an annexe consisting of a tiny dry area and a very, small and cramped shower which housed the electric water heater with very poor water pressure/volume. What made things worse was the host forgot to inform me that the power switch for the electric water heater is located on the outside of my room near the front door. This was a big disappointment as it took me a prolonged time to find this elusive switch and furthermore, as it was late no one appeared to be in attendance. (NB: There is a bell to summon them in emergency). Although the shower was spotlessly clean, overall it was terrible to use and not very functional. What exasperated the situation was the screen door partially jammed, and I feared that forcing it would cause damages or breakages – eventually it did open, as it was sticky.

My toilet and vanity sink area was located opposite my room, and this too was very small and the lock was not very efficient – it was concertina style with a slide lock (usually used in public toilets). The toilet was a little low to the ground but worked fine and the vanity sink was tiny and only really suitable for washing hands. (I shaved but made a mess and felt quite restricted.) However, it was all very clean and presentable.

The owners don’t like the usual coffee / tea stations so they offer this service within the guest’s dining room which also included biscuits and cakes (and real, fresh milk) – this is a nice touch, but as this is located on the ground floor can be a bit arduous going up and down stairs. However, they do offer a complimentary tray if requested. The dining room also has comfortable seating, contains games and tourism literature, and a large table which is used for breakfast.

Breakfast was a huge disappointment and the worse we’ve experienced to date. The selections of cereals was poor, the yoghurt was located in a communal bowl, was very bland and not much available, the fruit compote (or various berries) was OK but again lacked quantity, the percolated coffee also suffered in its quantity and after I took my cup there appeared to be only enough for another one (or two small cups), one jug consisting of a strawberry smoothie (no orange juice and none offered), and the selections of cooked breakfast were OK but the quality was poor – “Full cooked breakfast” included; one sausage (which was undercooked and lukewarm at best), two smallish bacon rashers (which were also lukewarm at best), two small grilled tomatoes, one mushroom (this was OK and warm) and a fried egg (which was the hottest of the lot). Toast arrived several minutes prior to the cooked breakfast and was cold by the time this main meal served, however there were several preserves on offer. Again there was only one host who seemed very flustered and unable to cope with the five guests in total, she even admitted to the other guests that after yesterday they were running low on supplies. (So does that mean we suffer with substandard hospitality, quality and quantity??) This is a tell tale sign of extremely bad and poor management / organisation skills and appears that these hosts have little or no training in hospitality. Personally, I don’t think there are any hospitality prerequisites in the UK for B & B/Guesthouse owners to have, just a licence/registration and suitable property, therefore some are great and, like these owners, some are poor. Owning a B & B is a simple matter of finance, running one successfully with happy guests is a whole different level of expertise. We have travelled from the other side of the world and expected better value and service for the money that they charged – No excuses!

Incidentally, there is parking available at the rear of the property, but we secured a spot close to the frontage.

Apart from the nice accommodations, the remainder was quite poor, not very good value for money, and I would not recommend this property to other travellers unless the other places are booked (better yet go to another town). For me, I doubt I would return to this part of the country, but if I did I would avoid this place. Shame as it does have potential.

We [ particularly my wife ] would like to thank the reviewer for taking so much time and effort out of his holiday to provide a review highlighting the fact that many B&Bs in the UK are operated/managed by individuals without the help of numerous staff.
Aside from the review consisting of a hatful of inaccurate and self opinionated statements it does prove that even B&B owners have a life away from the workplace and are not always available 24/7. It also proves that they are human, fallible, can make mistakes and are incapable of telepathy.
I hope that this review is useful to future guests, at any B&B or service establishment, in that they begin to realise that their needs can probably be met if they only make them known in advance and don't expect miracles and telepathy to exist or occur.
I hope that the reviewer finds the time to enjoy the rest of his holiday, and that he has a good flight back to Australia at the end of his stay.
