Our first time in this hotel , A little disappointing in some parts of the hotel ,room very plain ,,, And please be so carefull getting in and out of the bath tub , My wife fell getting into the bath , the bath needs something to hold onto to get in and out of the tub ( very high ), our room was 303 .
The hallways looked more like a hospital corridor very clinical ,not paintings or anything on the walls ,
The good part was food was very nice and the staff very friendly ,
If honest not sure if we would go back ,
Only done a few reviews but have done a lot of hotels in our time

Dear Guest

Thank you for taking the time to write this review following your recent stay with us.

I’m pleased that you enjoyed the food and service but naturally disappointed that some parts of our interior décor were not to your personal taste.
We feel that the Hotel is extremely well decorated in keeping with the buildings style and class.. A lot of time, effort, investment and of course TLC was put in to the restoration of this Grade 2 listed former Great North Eastern Railway HQ to bring it back to its former glory. Cedar Court Hotels worked closely with English Heritage when restoring the property and we have also received much praise from many a channel.

On behalf of myself and the rest of the team at The Grand, we look forward to welcoming you back to us in the future.

Best Wishes

This is a really good hotel. We stayed one night on a Dinner Bed & Breakfast rate. The lady who took the booking was friendly, helpful, informative and efficient. This experience continued from the moment of arrival, through checking in, eating and departure. We had an Executive room which was large, very well appointed and comfortable. The marble bathroom was large and even had a heated floor. We left the room at 7:30pm to go down for dinner and on our return the bathroom had been serviced, the towels and soaps etc. replaced. True 5 star service. We did also look at a standard "classic" room and a "De-Luxe" Room. They all had the same level of furnishings and appointments and seemed to differ only in size. Some had only a shower above the bath instead of a separate shower. All would have been comfortable. Although York has some fine restaurants we ate in the hotel out of sheer convenience. The food was delicious. Perfectly cooked, delightfully presented and the service again was friendly and efficient. Could not have faulted any part. The Dinner inclusive rate allowed full choice from the a la carte menu and in fact turned out cheaper than paying on the evening. The wine list was impressive with some eye-watering prices for some very fine wines but also a decent selection at £20 to £40. The location is very convenient being a mere 10 minute walk from all the main attractions in York. They park your car and bring it back the next morning outside the hotel to take away whenever is convenient. I wouldn't fault anything and would compliment everything on being done with style and good grace. Reception staff, Concierge and porters, housekeeping who all said good morning as you passed, and waiting staff in the restaurant were all helpful, friendly and efficient.

The hotel exceeded our expectations, staff were very professional and friendly . We were offered a complimentary room upgrade to a beautful executive room which was greatly appreciated. The location was central to everything too.
If there was a negative it would have to be the water -- the shower was a let down due to lack of pressure so stick to a bath.
Will definately visit this hotel again and will recommend to all.
Thanks again for a perfect short break.

This hotel was a little more expensive than the other places I saw when search for accommodations in York, but SOOOOOO worth it. The rooms were spacious, beautiful and clean. The staff was helpful, incredibly helpful and it was such a short distance to the trains that is made it easy to get around with our rolling suitcases.

It was a little longer of walk from the center of town, but after all the wonderful good and pint after pint of delicious beer, we could use the exercise. We had second floor street view and it was perfect. I am sure all the rooms are wonderful, but being able to watch the people walking along the wall of the city was neat.

Splurge a little and enjoy being pampered while visiting one of the coolest, mid-evil towns in England.

We returned this week from a 3 night break at this lovely hotel, and had a really nice time. The decoration and ambience were both very good, as one should expect from a 5-star hotel. I can only really compare my stay to previous stays at other 5-star hotels such as The Chester Grosvenor, and The Ritz.

I would say this hotel is comparable to The Chester Grosvenor. However, they don't have things as "spot-on" as they should be, and still have a few things to address to make it perfect. The majority of which I believe are simple staff training issues. I will just list a few examples...

-the turn down service was lovely. However, quite hit and miss on each of the nights-some nights we had tea/coffee/water replenished and Molton Brown products left on the bed, and some nights we didn't. There was no consistency.

-there was a mass of dust on the skirting board just next to the bed, behind the chair. Not just a layer, but balls of the stuff. Either the room hadn't been occupied for a very long time, or the cleaning hadn't been as thorough as it should have....

-the waitress at breakfast told us there was a £5 supplement for porridge as it was "hot" and not included on the continental selection. We had already asked on entering the restaurant and been assured it was included, and indeed it was included on the continental selection on the room service menu.

-we had Afternoon Tea at the restaurant. The initial waiter was excellent, but his shift ended soon after he served our food, and we were never approached by another waiter to ask if we would like more tea etc...There was only us and one other table, and we only saw the new waiter a couple of times, popping his head around the door. Indeed we had to leave the restaurant and stand at the bar, to ask for our bill.

-the receptionist on check out didn't ask about our stay, which is just a courtesy. Had she done I would have told her my Mum had vomited that evening after the Afternoon Tea. She had only eaten in the hotel that day apart from a flapjack and coffee at Starbucks, so maybe it was a coincidence?? Who knows!

I don't want to end on a negative-the hotel is very good but just has a few niggles to correct to make it excellent. But then again I'm renowned for being fussy, and would never book a hotel without reading every review on this site! The majority of the staff were fantastic, the location is great and the Spa lovely. I would stay again in the future.

Room Tip: Ask for a high floor and a nice view!

Former NER HQ still being used by network rail until 2007. Perfect for the railway station and the city. Everything within easy walking distance. The 2010 change of use to this superb hotel takes full advantage of the original features of this magnificent building. Sumptuous decor, huge wide corridors and an epic staircase all live up to it’s 5 star claims. Our city view room on the 4th floor was large, quiet and everything we expected. All the staff we encountered were polite, friendly and very attentive. If you fancy a bit of decadence this place is perfect.
