As usual we had another fantastic stay at Middlethorpe Hall. The Manager is very attentive and the staff friendly and welcoming. The hotel is great for the discerning traveller. We look forward to returning next year.

Room Tip: Number one room was fantastic but all rooms are fabulous.

Just returned from a wonderful 3 nights at Middlethorpe - which is at least equal to the best hotel I have stayed in in the UK. The pictures don't do it justice as they look a bit prim but it is gorgeous - we were in room 30 in the court yard - it was beautifully (looked recently) decorated - fresh yummy clearly home made shortbread each day in a tin - tea in the morning within 2 mins of calling for it - we were lucky with the weather so got out in the grounds a lot - and then the Spa! so nicely done - you cross the road and you go from 1699 to the 1950's - two old world cottages which are the facade for a modern and relaxing spa - we had the pool to ourselves most the time - and the Jacuzzi and steam room - wonderful.

The staff have that wonderful Yorkshire way of being warm and friendly but not OTT and not the snootiness you can get in some good hotels.

The dinner was pricey and the menu was the same on the three nights - so we had our first choice on the first night and ate outside the rest of the time as we were out and about but the food we had was well presented and interesting - breakfasts tasty and plates always warm (my personal bugbear) . The bar bill was daft but that was our fault! The ambience in the hotel couldn't be bettered - it is just like you are staying in a National Trust house instead of walking around one and although there is pictorial evidence of the place being fully restored in the 1980's - otherwise you would not know as it has been so well done - beautiful rooms, furniture and views all around. Have told everyone and will def be back. To think it is half the price of where we are going in Sussex next month - I cant see that it will be twice as good! Middlethorpe is very special - English Country at its best.

Room Tip: im sure the main house was also wonderful but we were in the court yard

From the staff to the food the stay at Middlethorpe was delightful. Everyone was was engaging, the gardens beautiful and food was exquisite. The only drawback is I can't live here permanently!!!

I had booked one night in Middlethorpe becauses I was attending a funeral , an hour away, the next day. My husband was joining me by train the next morning. I had driven up a day early to leave nothing to chance. The staff were incredibly welcoming when I arrived. I was upgraded to a lovely room and I was , as ever, impressed with Middlethorpe which we have been visiting for 11 years.
It was the next day, however, when I had cause to be really grateful. Our just-serviced car refused to start when we were just about to set off (it later transpired it needed a new battery) the Middlethorpe staff lept into action with their spare set of jump leads so that we could leave as quickly as possible to be at an event that was so important to us. We have always appreciated the hotels commitment to service but this really was going the extra mile ...

Room Tip: I prefer rooms on the 'entrance' side of the main hotel as these are quieter, away from the...

We stayed here for a few nights to celebrate our wedding anniversary.
We have always loved York, and chose the Middlethorpe based on previous reviews.
The room was spacious, warm and very clean. The decor in the room was not to our taste (subjective, I know), and we really couldn't get on with sheets and blankets. The headboard was torn at one end.The towels in the bathroom were the very best we'd ever had! The shower screen in the bathroom was permanently fixed to the bath, which meant you got soaked when turning on the shower.
The grounds were absolutely beautiful, and the building itself was very grand. The spa was good, and we enjoyed this too.
Our first breakfast was awful. The cooked food was cooked to a very poor standard, most of it was over cooked. The next morning we overheard some other guests complaining about the previous morning's breakfast. Luckily, the waitress informed them that it was a different chef working that day. All the other cooked breakfasts were good after that. There was a good selection at the cold buffet, and the home made muesli was the best I'd ever had! Sadly, I was unable to have pancakes one morning, because they had run out of maple syrup and were not expecting another delivery for a few days!
We didn't eat an evening meal, although we did have drinks during the evening and played chess in the drawing room - all very civilized! We struggled to get service a couple of times, which meant we went without.
All in all, it was a lovely place with beautiful grounds - just not our cup of tea!

We stayed 3 nights in a courtyard suite and had dinner on each night. The whole experience was first class in every way. Excellent accommodation with good housekeeping. Very good, if not cheap, food. The service and general welcome throughout was quite exceptional. Middlethorpe Hall is a splendid base for visiting both the city of York and the lovely North Yorkshire countryside, and is clearly well patronised by both visitors and locals. We thoroughly recommend it.

Room Tip: The courtyard suite was really spacious and only steps from the main house. Great to retreat to afte...

Imagine yourself in the English countryside, walking in the gardens with Mr. Darcy. If that idea appeals to you, then find some time to stay at Middlethorpe Hall. The main house is gorgeous and the coach houses looked lovely. The service was amazing, exactly what you expect from a stately hall. I was there for a business meeting, but suspect that most stay for leisure. The only downside to Middlethorpe Hall is that it is about 2.5 miles outside of York, so a taxi is needed to get to/from the city center - which is equally charming. I would think this would be a great weekend retreat - either for a couple or a group of girlfriends (there is a spa)!

Room Tip: I was in the main house, Lady Mary's suite. Three small rooms that flowed together - the living...
