Owner description: Step back in time when you visit this 18th-century town house, one of the finest examples of rococo decoration in England with its famous Terry collection of furniture and clocks.
Reviewed November 14, 2017

You feel as if you have travelled back to the mid 18th century when going round this Georgian town house, replete with all its original features and superb furnishings. You may associate Georgian houses with Bath and Jane Austen, but this is much earlier and distinctively different with its stucco ceilings, ornate lintels and original fireplaces. It is all enhanced at present by an exotic Georgian Christmas display complete with vast pies, aromatic cheese rounds and elaborate sugar formal gardens set out on the dining room table. The staff and guides are friendly and very helpful, and the experienced is enhanced if you are an Art Fund member as you get in free!

A very interesting visit of a very well preserved Georgian townhouse. The insides have had a lot of time and care spent in their restoration.

I was lucky enough to catch an exhibition’s last day as well so saw more than normal.

The volunteer guides are very helpful and informative.

As said in the most recent 4 and 5 “✅” reviews...a great Georgian house full of lovely furniture! Not cheap (GiftAid...) but a lot more intellectual value for money than the nearby Clifford tower (skip the tour but see the tower’s grounds and read about its history). Well restored and furnished house. Lovely and passionate volunteers throughout the rooms. Kids enjoyed as well.

A fascianting house with an interesting varied collection of matching furniture and china. Contaians much of the collection left by the Goddards (former owners of Goddards House near the racecourse).

If you're a regular at English Heritage and National Trust Houses (as I am) you may find this place somewhat small.

The guides (people) in the rooms are very good and friendly, but unless you've a particular interest in Georgian York Townhouses, then you'll have seen many similar things elsewhere.

The "made in York" exhibition feels like a bit of an afterthought, without much explanation and some of the items in cases not even identified.

The King David carving is something you won't see elsewhere - personally I thought it was amazing and justified the entrance fee.

If you're a visitor to this country who hasn't done similar things before then I would strongly recommend it as an insight into past British life, but if you've done similar things before, then you've pretty much done this, I'm afraid.
