Right in the middle of town, near the York Castle Museum, this house displays a beautiful collection of Georgian furniture and clocks. The ceilings give away hints as to what each room was used for, for example, there were carvings of Shakespeare in the library. Volunteers were in every room and gladly told me all about the fascinating furniture as well as the history of the family who lived here. Had a great chat with all of them, all extremely knowledgeable and friendly. I was there as a gap year student and therefore didn't have any student ID to receive a discounted price but they considered me a student anyway, so was very impressed by how lovely the people were. For anyone interested in clocks, there were some in there from the 17th century! They also have an exhibition which changes regularly.

So pleased this place was saved from demolition. After being a dance hall & a cinema it has now been restored to it's former glory.

This was a lovely tour of a Georgian Town House in easy reach of main attractions in the old town. The experience reminded me a bit of visiting Mt. Vernon in Virginia. There are docents in every room, but instead of hearing the same rehearsed lines for large crowds, you engage in personal discussions about the house, the family, and Georgian era traditions. And yes, though a bit more distantly related, its the same Fairfax family that were also Founding Fathers of Virginia.

The interiors are sumptuous with a great variety of 18th century furnishings and decor. A must see in York!

It's limited opening hours so check in advance. On the day we went it was guided tours only (they do have 'free flow' some days) and our guide was excellent, I strongly recommend you go around with someone if you can. The house is beautiful, when you see the before and after restoration pics it's unbelievable! Yes it's an expensive entrance fee but the upkeep costs of this place must be horrendous so I didn't mind. Lots of lovely details to spot as you go around and interesting stories about those who lived there. Highly recommended!

You feel as if you have travelled back to the mid 18th century when going round this Georgian town house, replete with all its original features and superb furnishings. You may associate Georgian houses with Bath and Jane Austen, but this is much earlier and distinctively different with its stucco ceilings, ornate lintels and original fireplaces. It is all enhanced at present by an exotic Georgian Christmas display complete with vast pies, aromatic cheese rounds and elaborate sugar formal gardens set out on the dining room table. The staff and guides are friendly and very helpful, and the experienced is enhanced if you are an Art Fund member as you get in free!
