We stayed here in June and enjoyed our stay so much stayed again in August and October but didn't think it necessary to put a further review on.
However after watching the jokers on 3 in a bed every morning over the Christmas period this place puts 95% of them to shame.
Very professionally run, clean cut contemporary rooms, great breakfast, friendly obliging unpretentious staff and excellent value for money when you compare what else is on offer in this popular city.

If we were visiting York as tourists we'd have stayed away given the devastating television coverage over Xmas of the flooding.
Thankfully we aren't tourists, we were dropping our daughter off at school in the city and discovered the flooding only effected isolated pockets of York and 95% is flood damage free. It was the same streets shown time and time again on Sky News making it look worse than it was.
The real damage which is clear is to tourism revenue which York is reliant on, the city is like a ghost town and without doubt hurting financially.
We're back next weekend and hope things have started to turn around.
Thank you to Mark & Melanie, the B&B was actually closed having a new kitchen fitted, but they allowed us to stay room only.

Our room accommodated three of us, and was cozy and comfortable. The location was great. We only stayed 1 night and we wished we had been able to stay a bit longer. This is a great place to stay. We had been discussing our stays while traveling through Europe, 7 countries in 2 two weeks, and we all could not forget our stay at Carlton House.

We stayed here on New Years Eve again with friends. It was as good as ever and had been newly decorated in places. We were concerned about the flooding and rang to make sure we wouldn't need a canoe. There was no problem whatsoever and walked into town easily with dry feet! The whole flooding situation had been grossly exaggerated on the TV and media . OK the usual pubs near the river were flooded but the shops etc were fine and open as usual. So don't hesitate to go!!!!
Thanks for a lovely stay once again!

Room Tip: All we have stayed in have been good.

Great location about 5 minutes walk from Micklebar Gate. Impressive terraced house with several floors. There was a nice large living room just off the reception area although we didn't spend any time in there as we were only staying overnight. Our bedroom was fairly large with a high ceiling that is characteristic of property of this period. The en-suite bathroom was clean and modern with all the usual nick naks you would expect. Our bed was very comfortable and overall we had a decent nights sleep even though our room overlooked the busy main road to the front. A freshly cooked english breakfast was served in a nice room in the basement with plenty of space between tables. Service was efficient and friendly. A couple of things to look out for; the car park to rear is quite small and cars are stacked in so if you arrive with a larger car or you are precious about your car then you might want to check about parking arrangements before you arrive. Also our room seemed large to be adequately heated by one medium sized radiator (although we have no direct experience of that because it was mild outside when we visited). On the plus side the owners and their staff are extremely friendly and helpful. We arrived late on a Friday evening in the middle of a biblical downpour to be greeted by a friendly face who ordered us a taxi whilst we put our bags in our room so we could shoot out immediately to go to a gig. Overall a great find and we would stay here again if we visit York.
