Built in the 1960s and with all bedrooms the same size, thereby lies the problem. It was built at a time when the traveller was not quite as sophisticated and so a small bedroom was acceptable.
That is what you will get here. Small bedroom, tiny bathroom and univiting bar/restaurant area and in my view for the price, you could do much better. That said, the staff were friendly, the breakfast ok and the Wallace Arnold brigade seemed happy enough.
One final point it must have been a jolly good salesman who sold them the TVs in this place - they are enormous and given the small bedrooms, look ridiculous.

Room Tip: You cannot choose a good room as they are all the same size - the TV is so big it hardly fits in the...

I stayed at this hotel Friday 27th to 30th April 2012. This was part of a tour group which I had driven to as a coach driver. The hotel is on the approach road to York about 2 miles outside the city, it was in a quiet area but close to a really good pub church and newsagents.
The hotel room was good I was on the second floor it had a a closed wardrobe and drawers, was not disturbed at night. Because I was part of a prepaid group the menu was not the same as the other guests but could not complain as the food was excellent. The breakfast was great.
The only criticism is the cost of the WIFI , 5 pounds for an hour, or 16 pounds for 24 hours. You would think that a hotel chain this large would give its guests free internet.
The staff were excellent to our group throughout the stay, thanks to the front desk girls.
I would go back with my family and would recommend this hotel to anyone.

Walked in and got a discounted double room. Very good sized room with all the necessary amenities. The breakfast was very good value with a wide selection of hot and cold dishes. The staff were extremely helpful both at check in and when we made enquiries of what to see and do.
It was very quite of a night and close to the city . Well worth it.

We stayed in the Holiday Inn for a girly break when visiting York (which is beautiful). The hotel is a good 40 minute walk out of the city but this didnt bother us at all. We did not breakfast in the hotel as it seemed expensive and we had to walk past a wetherspoons to get into York which serves a perfectly adequat breakfast for a third of the cost. The hotel itself was spotless and the staff were very friendly and helpful. There was a lovely pub across the road where the food was excellent and reasonably priced.

Where to begin. We booked our rooms in advance, but my uncle's room was 15 pounds cheaper for each night, so if you want this discount book from Canada. I ended up in a room on the second floor next to a generator and had a humming noise for two nights. Me and my wife asked about changing rooms and was told it was full and therefore could not be done. At no point was anyone apologetic about the situation. Would avoid the second floor and expecting good service and you will be fine. Breakfast is excellent and worth having.

Room Tip: Avoid the second floor, ground floor is ok

Dear Guest
Thank you for taking the time and trouble to complete a review further to your recent stay. First and foremost, please may I offer you my most sincere apologies for your disappointing stay. Regarding the rates, we do have available advance purchase rates which are available globally through the Holiday Inn website and guarantee best rate at time of booking.
I am most sorry to learn of the ‘humming’ noise which you experienced in your room and I have requested our Maintenance team to resolve this immediately. I am just very sorry that we did not resolve this situation during your stay.
On a brighter note, I was pleased to learn how you found breakfast enjoyable.
Once again, please accept my sincerest apologies.
Kind regards
Louisa Green

We always stay here around Christmas time when visiting York for the Panto & Sightseeing. It's a Standardised Chain Type Hotel. However what makes it worthwhile is that, its in a quiet location so you can sleep well, you can park your car in the carpark, all day FREE & its Safe (york is Horrendous for parking & expensive),just get the local bus for £1.50 into the centre, the stop is outside the hotel & it turns up every 15 minutes.Rooms are Comfortable,Clean if unspectacular.Breakfast is very good. All you can Eat Hot & Cold Buffet with plenty of Choice.Book early online to get a good price deal, which sometimes can include a 3 course evening meal deal.

The Holiday Inn York is a great base for visiting the City and the surrounding countryside. The hotel is within walking distance of the city centre or there is a regular bus service from the main road. The room was clean and well presented and of a decent size. The Reception team could not have been more polite or helpful, even when the Hotel was especially busy. We have stayed in this Hotel on a number of occasions and will happily stay there again.
