Many people come to York to dine at Star in the City. Well, Stonegate Retreat is our own 'Star' in the City of York. We have stayed here numerous times now and every time is just perfect. The apartment is warm, cosy, very well equipped and unbelievably quiet considering you are in the heart of the city. The owner Catherine is a joy to deal with and always responds to enquiries very quickly, often within an hour. We will return again, what more can we say!
Stonegate Retreat is a true gem of a holiday rental. The location is excellent -- a short walk from the train station and close to many of York's major sites and amenities. And there are lovely Minster views from inside the apartment as well as from the courtyard below.
The apartment is immaculate, spacious (ample room for two couples), comfortable and well appointed. We noted that Catherine, the host, supplied items that all rentals should, but often don't, such as a fire extinguisher, fire blanket, first aid kit and a complete set of manuals for the appliances. She also provided excellent instructions for locating and accessing the property and responded quickly to our questions. If we return to York, Stonegate Retreat will be our first choice for lodging.
Excellent apartment in the heart of York, high quality furniture and fittings throughout. Presentation immaculate. Communication and welcome from owners is 1st class. We (a 60-ish couple) would rebook in a heartbeat.
Unfortunately, if you have mobility issues, this apartment isn't for you as it is somewhat of an obstacle course to reach the apartment's front door from street level, including a final flight of stairs.
Having been to York lots of times and always staying in hotels, we decided to try the apartment experience. It was marvellous! The apartment is spacious and clean and the kitchen is stocked with everything you need, even down to bin liners. All we needed to buy was food. We were relaxed from the moment we walked in; it really felt like a home from home. Lovely views of the Minster. We were also right in the city centre but the apartment was very quiet during the night. Perfect!
I would be delighted to recommend this apartment to family, friends, or someone who is looking for a lovely stay in York city centre.
Very close too the cathedral a minimal walk to the train/ bus stations and what's more is close to 'Betty's tea rooms'
We've just had a lovely weekend at York races with friends who also stayed at the apartment. The apartment was secure, clean and very private yet in the city centre you'd walk past and not realise it was there. The apartment had 1 large bathroom and 1 large on suits ample for what we needed both had showers so it was also again brilliant for 2x couples the living room/ kitchen was large with lovely views and a smart TV with wifi suitable for any quick emails or catch up with work. The kitchen had everything in there as you'd expect and I couldn't recommend booking with Catherine highly enough to do the apartment any real justice without going there yourself.
Pricing for the apartment some might say is expensive yet others will say it's right not everyone will agree sadly. We found it was reasonably priced for what we expected as we had a couple staying with us to split the bill the apartment was cheaper than hotels.
There was amenities local to the apartment for bread milk and ice yet tea coffee and sugars were provided, cleaning products including the dishwasher tablets were also provided making it a excellent place to stay and was easy to clean and tidy before departure.
There was a bonus with parking of which was free in a wide range of car parks with a valid pass supplied by Catherine. We made the mistake of traveling home with this but Catherine has been very understanding of packing bags and forgetting. We are sending this first class tomorrow morning so if your reading this review please don't do the mistake we have.
So all in all a great apartment that we would highly recommend and a rate of 5/5

Very central location within the walled city and in walking distance of everything. York is much smaller and more contained than it seems at first so don't be intimidated by what sounds like a complicated parking system. We parked at Marygate, never had a problem getting a space and it was a holiday weekend. A pleasant 10 minute walk through the park gets you to the apartment in Blake Street, which is a calm oasis in a bustling city. Very well equipped, with quality furnishings and appliances.Communication with the owners was pleasant and helpful. Buy your provisions at M&S Food Hall just down the road and fresh fruit and veg from the Shambles Market, which is even closer. I couldn't recommend this place more highly.
This is the second time we have stayed at this apartment and we will return again and again. The apartment is a luxurious oasis. You are right in the centre of York (literally 50 yards from Bettys) and yet once you enter the apartment you enter a peaceful oasis with no conception that you are in the midst of a bustling city. The only noise you are likely to hear are the lovely bells of York Minster. The apartment is cosy, warm and incredibly well equipped. Parking in York is at a premium and the owner even provides a York City Council parking pass allowing you to park in any of the council maintained car parks. This alone saves you £12/day. We have stayed in numerous rental properties in York over the last 30 years and this is the best by some distance
