We stayed at this beautiful hotel on a Saturday night, and although it is located in the centre of Oxford, we found ourselves drawn back to the gardens for drinks. The cocktails, although fairly expensive are the best I’ve tasted, and the sun setting behind the stone walls of the old prison was stunningly beautiful. The room was large and clean with quirky wall art and balcony doors. Being a Saturday night, loud music and the sounds of party goers could be heard from the room, but the balcony doors managed to keep most of this out in the early hours, and the sumptuously comfortable bed made for a wonderful nights sleep. The serving staff were helpful, unobtrusive and friendly, and the trip was made even more special when my partner proposed (and I said yes).... I will not hesitate to return in the future!

Amazing food, attentive and friendly service, great atmosphere. The steak was superb and the Rogan Josh was delicious. We love cooking, so we are always very happy when we find a restaurant that serves flavours we cannot cook at home. We had a fantastic evening! Highly recommend it for couples or group of adults.

The hotel still retains most of its character as a jail. The rooms are furnished in an appropriate style. I loved the carpet and cushion chalk mark detail symbolising the time passing for the prisoner.
The food is excellent but the drinks are expensive - maybe not compared to London prices but certainly from my point of view.
As has been mentioned it is ridiculously hot. We has a top floor room so I suppose all the heat went up. I realise that they are limited because it is a listed building but the air conditioning needs to work better. The cell windows are authentic so should not open- however the rooms have had a new window added so I don't see why these could not have some sort of ventilation built in to them as they do not open either.
It is right in the centre of oxford so great as a base for exploring from.

Room Tip: Sunday stopover rates good value. You have to spend a minimum amount in their restaurant but easy to do.

We stayed for two nights on a Spring break. The staff were fantastic and very attentive. We had a superior cell on the fourth floor, the room was lovely except very hot, windows were up high ~ slats really, I understand its an historic building, but they could not be opened. Unfortunately this made the room airless and hot. As we couldn't see outside it was difficult to plan what to wear for the day!
Great breakfast, we stuck with continental as not a great lover of fry up, the fruit and yoghurt was lovely. Part of the deal was to choose two courses from the spring menu, first night was really good however as the menu was the same the second night with only one vegetarian choice, we choose of the a la carte, which you could have to the same value or pay extra. The meal was fantastic, loved it. Alfredo and Adrian in particular were very attentive and a great asset to Malmaison.
We parked at the park and ride £8 for 72 hours rather than £28 per night at the hotel, very easy.
Loved the perfect location, the history surrounding and the two night stay. Totally understand that history gets in the way of modern comfort regarding A/C.

Dear naianiretak,

Thank you very much for your review.

I am pleased that overall you enjoyed your stay, and were able to enjoy both breakfast and dinner with us in the Brasserie. I am particularly happy to see your kind comments about our staff, and I will be more than happy to pass on your thanks to both Alfredo and Adrian.

I am sorry that the nature of the prison cells means that windows cannot be opened, however if you return in the future we do have other rooms with windows which open, so please feel free to contact our reception team directly who will be happy to help.

Thank you very much again for your feedback.

Kind regards,

We love staying in quirky hotels and this one did not disappoint. The hotel itself is a converted prison and simply looks stunning. The room was amazing and the bed very comfortable. But the best thing the hotel has to offer is its service. It was the best service we received in a very very long time. We checked in with Patrick in the morning and again miraculously had him as our waiter in the hotel’s restaurant in the evening. As it wasn’t too busy at dinner we talked about our travel plans, life back in America and the history of the prison. He came across as a friendly, funny yet very professional individual. We really hope his talent is recognized within the hotel.
If we are to ever return to England Malmaison will be our first choice!
