Beware the trick that The Bear Hotel play on you. They will write the room price for the first day on your room card, but what they won't tell you is that it will rise by a random amount each day. The final day (a Wednesday) at £246 a night was grossly overpriced for what was offered. Breakfast remained good, as always. Dismal catering for dinner and this has not improved over several years.

Dear Guest

I was concerned to receive your review and would like to apologise for any confusion caused. Our rates vary each day, and rates will go up and down according to demand.
The total amount for the stay is quoted to customers verbally when making a reservation.

I am glad that you enjoyed your breakfast experience but am sorry you were disappointed with dinner. Our restaurant menu changes daily with fresh produce and we offer traditional English cuisine in the bar.

I do hope that we will have the opportunity of welcoming you back to the Bear. Indeed, please contact me directly should you have a date in mind, and I will be delighted to take care of the arrangements for you personally and restore your confidence in the hotel.

Kindest regards

Chris Rafe

We stayed the the Bear for 4 nights in June. The hotel is an old coach Inn. We stayed in the loft which consisted of 3 rooms (since we were a family of 3). The bedrooms were spacious and the bathroom was of a decent size. The hotel is clean the beds were very comfortable. Our room was facing the street but the place is very quiet so we had no issues with noises. The only issue we had was that our room did not have an a/c but at least the weather was not warm but a bit chilly and we had fans in the rooms.

Room Tip: The ceiling of the loft was very low so it's a problem for someone over 6 feet tall.

Helen and I stayed here for one night in June. We had the room facing immediately on to the street. Initially I was concerned about noise levels, however, the sleeping area was at the rear of the suite and we did not have any challenges. The housekeeping staff seemed rather under pressure with ourselves and at least one other couple unable to access our rooms as they had not been prepared on time. This did not cause any major upset as we simply wandered into Woodstock before taking our spaniel for a walk along the river.
Once in the room it was rather old fashioned but then this is in keeping with the hotel in general and everything was clean and working. The bed was comfortable and the lounge area well sized although perhaps a little dark. Reception staff were knowledgeable and friendly and we were made to feel very welcome. This was a marked contrast to the restaurant where the staff were somewhat frosty.

This is our second time staying at The Bear. We love the hotel with its unique historic style. Impressively, our room 19 - had a/c. The room was clean and gorgeous with a sofa sitting room (our son slept on the pull out) and two chairs to watch tv. The room had many windows that opened for a breeze.
Next time, I would not pay extra for the breakfast. It is 15 pounds, for toast, coffee and small selection of fruits. Additionally, there a ton of pubs/restaurants that offer food just a very short walk away.

We stayed here when we went to see max Richter at Bleinheim Palace, it's an easy five minute walk. The plus points are, nice secluded courtyard and cottage style rooms with comfy beds and coffee machine. The minus points are no air conditioning - there was a fan in the cupboard - and not brilliant breakfasts. Air conditioning is not an easy sort but things like making sure the breakfast coffee is not so weak it is see through, is. We would visit again and not book breakfast, Woodstock has lots of other places to eat.
