Owner description: In 1939 an extraordinary discovery was made deep in the Suffolk countryside as the remains of a 90ft Anglo-Saxon ship was revealed, surrounded by fantastic treasure and the now famous helmet. Sutton Hoo was soon realised as one of Britain's most important archaeological sites, believed to be the final resting place of early Anglo-Saxon warrior king, Raedwald. Visit our Exhibition Hall and learn about the history of the Anglo-Saxons and this extraordinary site, including all 18 mounds eventually discovered. Step back to the 1930s in Tranmer House, the Edwardian home of Mrs Edith Pretty, who first decided to discover exactly what lay beneath the mysterious mounds. Relax in our café and look for a souvenir from our National Trust gift shop and bookshop. There are also tons of activities for kids, including dressing up, quizzes and trails across the site, and a play-area to run off any last remaining energy. Don’t forget to check our website for up to date information on our events!

Well laid out displays with lots of information about the site. The guides were very informative & friendly as were the shop staff. Promoting membership was a little pushy. Worth a visit if your in area.

We came here primarily to have a walk before we stopped for a light bite. The views frome the site are fantastic and the walk was lovely. We stopped and had an excellent light lunch. As members of theNational Trust we visit a few Trust sites and the food is always good. Thank you. We went in to view the exhibition afterwards which was very interesting and surprising seeing as so many of the finds had been taken to the British Museum - well done and thank you

Amazing story well told and illustrated. The walk around the site could be better sign posted and with more story boards along the route. Cafe and shop were very good.

A difficult place to bring to life because all you can see are some of the remaining mounds but Pauline, our guide, was enthusiastic, knowledgable and good humoured and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay.

Considering that a lot of the finds from Sutton Hoo are held at the British Museum, I wasn't sure what to expect from the exhibition at the site. It was actually a good exhibition with some really interesting pieces presented well, along with a succinct video presentation. As well as the exhibition you can walk around the reconstructed burial mounds and there's a cafe and a couple of bookshops which are all pretty good too.
