“Amazing value, location spot-on”

The Bloc Hotel in Birmingham is pared down to the minimum with room size, but you only lose the furniture you didn't need in the first place anyway! Who needs a wardrobe if you're only staying for one or two nights?! Beautiful, luxurious egyptian cottage sheets, state-of-the art monsoon shower, wall-mounted TV kept it cool, yet romantic...and all within shouting distance of leafy St Paul's Square and a very pleasant 15-20 min canalside walk to the city centre. In the other direction, it's 3 mins walk to a handy Tesco Express and only another two or three to a wonderful pub, the Lord Clifden with a late licence, table-tennis in the garden, and nicely prepared yet excellent value home-cooked pub food. It's also in the historically interesting jewellery quarter, which showcases a top attraction, the Museum of the Jewellery Quarter. Would recommend to anyone to spend a couple of nights whilst perhaps attending an event in the NEC or similar. Or just for a city break in it's own right.

What's to fault? This is a bargain hotel in an excellent location! Having read some other reviews - it is possibly not the easiest place to navigate if you don't know the area at all. I recommend either using Google maps on your phone or printing off a small map since it's a 15min walk to the city centre. I'm slow and it took me a lot less than 20mins to walk to Moor St Station to meet a friend.

So, location great - nice and quiet too. Room is very small but perfectly layed out. Wet room is a little odd since the loo does get a bit wet! But it's no big deal. It's exactly what I was after - a room to sleep in after a night out in Birmingham. Absolutely would not complain. Yes it's small - but that's the whole concept of the place! I had a room without a window and (although I did crave some natural light in the morning) I didn't feel claustrophobic. Everything was absolutely spotlessly clean too.

One last note - I left a VERY expensive ring in my room when I checked out - went back to get it and the girl who had cleaned the room had tied it up in a little bag with my room number and name on it. So, all in all - a trustworthy place, with friendly staff, great location and unbeatable price! What more do you want?!

This is a modern but sober hotel. No bar, nor garden. Expect a small but fancy room. It is actually like a giant closet, with a bed and a fancy TV but no chair or table (except a smal one next to your bed). The bed is surrounded by walls on 3 sides and in one of them there is a nice TV, on the other a roller blind to cover a non existing window. It is actually nicely done. There is no closet to put in your clothes and not a lot of space for a suitcase either. It is fine to occupy the room alone or with your partner, but not with just a friend. (mainly because it is small and you have no privacy) What kind of bothered me is the shower. Everything gets soaken wet if you take a shower and the bathroomfloor stays wet for quite a while so you get wet feet everytime you enter the bathroom or you have to wear your shoes, but then the floor gets dirty. There was also a weird smell in my room, maybe because it was humid, I don't know. The bed was great, I slept well the first night and horrible the 2nd because some guests returned home late and loud (of course you this could happen anywhere). Then I noticed there is no phone in the room to call the reception. I missed a machine to buy water, but maybe it was available on another floor. The hotel is located 15 min. walk (a nice walk) from the citycenter.

I have just finished a seven month (!) stint here staying weeknights whilst relocating career. On every occasion I've stayed I have found the booking system totally reliable, the staff thoroughly pleasant and professional, the place is always extremely clean, and all-in-all I was never disappointed, which has made a difficult transition bearable. Yes, as some reviewers have pointed out, the specifications are in some ways quite minimalist (or basic, if you prefer) and I certainly would have appreciated a few home comforts like a wardrobe or tea/coffee facilities, but was content to fend for myself food-wise. The 'accessible' rooms have a little more space than some others. If you can get your head around the 'no windows' concept then you'll be fine, but if you are looking for luxury pampering then this concept wouldn't suit you anyway. If it's more about having a really comfy bed, a great shower and a clean simple room, then this is for you. There is free parking outside 6pm-8am and the area, for somewhere near a major city centre, is both quiet and safe. For a city break, or work purposes, I would say Bloc is a great choice.

Room Tip: Accessible rooms are larger.

This hotel is located in a very quite area (jewellery quarter) and has no facilities for eating. I had to drive for over 20 mins before I found somewhere decent to eat. There is some on street parking but you have to pay before 6pm. and after 8am. The room was awful. I did realise that it would be small, but even though I had paid the extra £5 for a window, it was still very claustrophobic. The bathroom is modern, but not clean, and the shower is directly in front of the toilet seat. It is supposed to be a 'wet room' style, but this just results in the floor outside of the bathroom getting very wet, which probably accounts for the unpleasant damp smell that persists in the room. What I found most unpleasant was the floor in the room, which my feet stuck to as I walked across, goodness knows what was on it. Not nice, smelly, dirty, accomodation (wouldnt call this a hotel), with no facilities.

Thank you taking time to write your review. We appreciate that Bloc Hotel may not cater for everybody's needs, however from past reviews people have understood the concept and generally liked the product, cleanliness and location. Although there are no food and beverage facilities within the hotel, there are an abundance of restaurants just a 3 minute walk away, from little Deli's and coffee shops to renowned award winning restaurants. Reception are trained and are only too happy to pass on this information should someone staying at the hotel not know the area.
I am surprised to hear that the cleanliness of the bedroom and bathroom was not up to standard and hopefully this was brought to Receptions attention so that the problem's you mentioned were rectified, as we would not expect anybody to stay in an unclean room. Housekeeping would have also needed to be spoken to.
We hope that hotel guests report any issues whilst staying in the hotel so as to give the hotel an opportunity to resolve them should there be any. Thank you for bringing this to my attention.

Bloc, is only 10-15 minutes walk from the city centre in an area I'd consider as safe. It wasn't too difficult to find from New St Station. Quick check-in. A quick lift us to our second floor room, with clear, modern signage. Bit strange walking into darkness waiting for lights to come on. All LED not very bright though, get used to it.

Room numbering is unusual, but easy to follow. The room is exactly as described, a bed and a bathroom. Not somewhere you'd want to spend much time. We were there for two nights. Wouldn't stay longer. It is meant for business people on the move looking for a good bed, nice TV and lots of warm water from a very good shower. The room did NOT have a feeling of spaciousness as others have said. Mirrors, colours, lighting and design combined to give a cramped but thinking you may have more sort of atmosphere. The bed takes up half the room, is big, soft and comfortable. Towels provided on the bed, as big & fluffy as advertised. Set in to the wall at the end of the bed is a Samsung flat screen TV - nice touch. Wetroom/toilet area very good with lashings of hot water. Ceiling drench as well as standard shower. Experiment with the taps.... no instructions!

There are vending machines on 1st and 3rd floors which were not particularly useful other than for sweets/crisps/soft drink.

In summary, a reasonable place to get your head down if you are on business and looking for a crash pad, and if all you want is a sleep and a shower there's probably nowhere better than the Bloc. I doubt we would stay again for a long weekend as it is more business type/crash pad oriented. But it is aimed at that market I think.

Room Tip: Request third floor if you opt for a window. Take a travel kettle if you want your morning cuppa in...

A great hotel for a great price! Had no complaints about the cleanliness and efficiency of the hotel and staff. However we did find that having a room without a window meant that we were on the ground floor next to staff and cleaners facilities meaning it was very noisy in the morning. If returning we would request a different room. There was everything we needed in the room, with a great shower! Would have been a nicer touch if the coffee making facilities in the reception were cheaper!

Thank you for your review. I am sorry to hear that housekeeping disturbed your stay. On a weekend , housekeeping starts later at 9am, as we are aware that the majority of people like a lie in on these days.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Bloc hotel is located in Birminghams Jewellery Quarter. The village atmosphere created by its cafes-bars and restaurants is complemented by the business-shopping-arts and sports facilities that are also on its doorstep. We have taken loose inspiration from Japanese pod style hotels which means much larger rooms more akin to a cabin on a luxury yacht with finishes and fittings to match. The rooms are equipped with a King Size Double Bed-luxurious linen-climate control-wet room with monsoon drench shower-Samsung 32inch led flat screen TV and high speed WIFI. Birmingham is of course a centrally located travel hub and for many of our visitors that will be the most important factor in just how quickly and conveniently they can access the motorway network-national rail and international flights. ... more   less
