With just a couple of hours to spend in the city of Coventry we made our way (after the shops) to the new cathedral. It has actually been built for quite a few years now but in relation to the part mediaeval cathedral , which is a bombed out shell,it is relatively young.
The entrance through a set of rooms is full of information about the cathedral and set at the top of a staircase is a wonderful rugged cross actually made from a beam of wood rescued from the old cathedral as it burned.Inside the cathedral itself there is a great sense of space, light and colour. There are huge windows of coloured glass all in different beautiful colours. One of the guides explained that the colours change from window to window as we progress up the aisle.Starting with green which signifies youth, moving through orange and red and purple , signifying maturity and seniority and finally the golden window signifying the glory of life to come.It was really breathtaking and awe-inspiring and worth a visit just to see them.

The warmth and beauty of the building, the impact of the light through the coloured glass, the sincerity of the whole building, truly moving.

At £8 this is expensive. The building is ok, depends on what you like, the glass is nice but there is actually very little to see for the cost.

I walk by Coventry Cathedral most weekdays, it is a building you either love or hate. For me it is a large modern brick building akin to a warehouse. It is imposing but plain outside and plain and unlike a religious building inside. This area of Coventry was heavily damaged in the 1940s and so most of the centre of Coventry has similarly 1960s style soulless buildings, including the main shopping centre nearby. The Guildhall, next to the remains of the old cathedral, and a few pre-1940 building have survived and worth a visit. The surroundings are dominated by Coventry University, a large drab hotel, drab student accommodation, bus station and elevated sections of the ring road. Unless there is a specific reason for visiting, your time would be better spent in Stratford, Birmingham or Leicester.

Amazing setting, very tranquil after the bustle of the city and a good place for reflection. Moving place to be.
