What a beautiful place; a site of awesome splendor - the lofty and soaring Cathedral - the massive old trees and the lawns, the pond and the old, old buildings surrounding the square between the cathedral and the old town. This is like a life-size showpiece of medieval times, a walk-on diorama, a step back in time, a place of serene tranquility and timeless grandeur in what's one of the oldest (still 'active') settlements in Great Britain, ancient Sarum. It's like something out of a historic movie.
Well, what an important spot! Just look at that cathedral!
This lovely Close is really unspoilt, full of lovely architecture and atmosphere. Indeed it has been used for some scenes in at least one period film. Several of the building are open to the public as museums. Mompesson House for example was a family house and is very interesting to visit. Other building have archaelogical and historical exhibits and there is a cafe in one of them. One of our Ministers, Edward Heath, lived in one house on the edge of the river Avon. A very peaceful place.
Went to school here from age 3 to 18, and love the place. Never really appreciated it when I was young but now I am amazed every time I go. From the Cathedral itself to the surrounding grounds, the whole place is stunning. Lovely to see it change through the year too.
