“Standard Hilton - excellent location”
Reviewed 15 April 2012

We had two rooms overlooking the castle so the location was really good for the centre of the city and attractions such as the museum, millenium stadium. The rooms were ok, beds very comfortable king size with good bedding but the air con was noisy- bizarrely even when off. Also needed ear plugs due to bells ringing from somewhere from 4am if not earlier. Cocktail bar not open when we were there. Bath ok and good shower and nice products. Mini bar had reserved spaces for personal items which was a plus. Shopping area just around the corner. Recommend the museum and art gallery- excellent Queen exhibition on with Anigoni,Warhol,Gilbert and George, Jamie Reid etc. Also loads of milestone photos. All free. Parking free after 6 nearby. Recommend a trip to St Fagins.

Wonderful location! We really enjoyed our stay and how close we were to the shops and attractions. We stayed in a twin room and were amazed and thrilled to find that the twin beds were practically doubles. The room and en-suite were clean, but the carpets were starting to get a little bit tired. The fitness centre and pool were great and had excellent hours of availability.

The only thing that was a negative during our stay was internet costs. While wi-fi is free, those of us who travel without a laptop are punished by ridiculously high internet rates. The Business Centre offered 15min/3 GBP which seems rather exorbitant when the tourist office can offer the following: 15min/70p, 30min/1 GBP, 60min/2 GBP. Something to work on.

To allow you to fully judge my review the following information my be useful. I am a Gold Card member of Hilton and often get upgraded and get to use the lounge. I have stayed in Hilton hotels across North America, Europe, and Asia. I am a little fussy because I have usually traveled far and stay a few days.

Okay. The good things in this hotel outweigh the bad. Location is fabulous. It is on the apex of all the main shopping areas. You come out of the hotel, take a sharp right and within 100 metres you are in the shopping area. Take a sharp left and you are at Cardiff Castle. If you are lucky enough to get a room with a view you can find yourself, as we did, looking across and down inside the castle. You are also near plenty of cafes, bars and restaurants. Inside the hotel the staff on the front desk are very friendly and welcoming. The (upgraded) rooms are nice and spacious. Room comes with coffee/tea maker and nice flat screen television (32" I would guess). For those with a lift/elevator phobia (like my wife has) they are the open type so you get a view of the hotel as the lift goes up and down. (My wife prefers this style as she feels claustrophobic when she can't see out!). The cleaning staff were also friendly and quite accommodating.
There were a couple of negatives. We arrived just after 3:00 pm only to be told that our room was not yet cleaned. We had to leave our luggage at the front desk and go shopping while we waited for the room to be cleaned. To be fair, we were being upgraded. Nonetheless, we might have expected the room to be ready by 3 in the afternoon. This is likely not typical so don't be put off. The other negative was the lounge staff who were both individually and collectively unfriendly. On women in particular seemed far more interested in policing than welcoming people. Example: when a woman was leaving the lounge with a bottle of Coke (it is something you are not allowed to do) the staff member shouted at her across the room and told her off. (There must be a better way of enforcing the rules!!). When people were having trouble getting into the lounge (several people had key trouble) the same staff member, sitting right by the door, did not get up to open the door. People had to knock to get attention. We saw four staff members in the lounge during our stay and three out of four seemed unfriendly. In fairness, we did notice that two of the staff became a little more friendly to people she seemed to recognize. After four days we did not seem to fall into this category with any but one of the lounge staff.
The lounge itself had a magnificent view of the castle and was a great place to sit. There was a reasonable range of wine, beer, and spirits, the canopies were okayish. Tea time was goodish, with one or two nice pastries. The lounge was crowded on a couple of times but was generally fine the rest of the time.
In terms of value we stayed at the Hilton because of their loyalty scheme but we could have stayed at the equally well located Parc Hotel for close to half the price.

I've stayed at this hotel a number of times.
I have always found the rooms to be clean and comfortable.
The staff are helpful and attentive.
The Executive Lounge has recently been refurbished and has lovely views of Cardiff Castle.
The hotel's location is ideal, with easy access to local shopping and theatres.

The location of this Hilton cannot be beaten. Our room (even numbers) overlooked the castle in one direction and the City Hall and Clock Tower in the other. Walk out the front door and turn left or right and you are in the heart of the shopping district. St David's Shopping Centre is amazing and has some good chain restaurants for a quick meal! Everything is at your doorstep at this hotel.

Rooms are typical of UK Hilton properties. The size is good, beds comfortable, albeit on wheels so be careful if you lean on the bed, as you could slide across the room!! The bathroom we had was spacious and had a separate shower and bathtub. There was some mould on the grouting in the shower but the room was clean. Good lighting and a comfortable seating area with two chairs----something not always available. Windows also opened, which is a nice feature. Ample tea and coffee making facilities and supplies (shortbreads), at least in the executive rooms on the 6th floor.

The lounge on the 7th floor has a wonderful view of the castle, as well and is quite spacious. There was a good selection of drinks in the evening (6-8 for food and 6-10.45 for drinks). There is afternoon tea, with some really nice pastries and cookies. Breakfast, which is advertised as 'continental' in the lounge, actually consists of bacon and eggs, as well as fruit, yoghurt, pastries, cereal, cold meats and cheeses and juices. So it is much more than 'continental' (the only thing I think that was missing were the beans and the grilled tomatoes!).

HH Gold and Diamond can have the Buffet breakfast downstairs but there is a charge of an additional 5 GBP p/p. I don't think it is worth it because the lounge breakfast is fine.

Staff at Reception were very friendly and helpful. Staff in the lounge were more hit and miss. Some were friendly and some not. There seems to be a policy of asking for your room number, as soon as you enter the lounge and this can seem less than welcoming, depending on how it is done.

We didn't use the health club facilities so cannot comment but they seem popular and must be open by membership to the public because there is a separate entrance at the side of the hotel.

In short, this is a good Hilton. I wouldn't say it is a 5* but definitely very good (little things like grubby Hotel Information and Room Service cards in the room, no automatic turndown service and mouldy showers let it down). However, I would definitely stay here again and would have no trouble recommending it to anyone coming to Cardiff.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a view of the castle and on one of the upper floors

I attended a Ball here a week ago and was quite impressed with the way they handled 180 odd people for dinner. Even in good hotels it is hard to get a good meal when the numbers are so big but the meal was pretty good. The first and second courses were perfectly good and the pudding was lovely - but spoilt by a blob of horrible aritfical cream on the side! For such a hotel this seemed a really bad mistake! No cream at all would have been better. However the staff coped courteously with the differing requests from our table for decaff coffee and tea when the coffee was brought. The hotel was welcoming and the staff helpful and friendly. The only other comment to make was the fact that although the room the Ball was in was on the ground floor the Ladies was downstairs! This seems very bad planning. But the atmosphere was good and I hope the Ball will be held there again.

I am really pleased to read that you were impressed by the food and service during the recent Ball held at the hotel.

It is really lovely to see such positive comments regarding our Conference and Events and something that all the team are delighted to read.

I have also noted your constructive feedback regarding the cream that was served with your dessert and may I thank you for bringing this to our attention.

I do hope that we will have the opportunity of welcoming you back for another event at our hotel.

Kind regards

As with a lot of 5 star hotels I believe their rating is based on amenities such as leisure facilities or number of bars/restaurants rather than the essential 'fixtures and fittings'. The room was larger than expected albeit the furniture was pretty tatty, the carpet was stained, and whilst the bathroom was lovely and big it didn't have something as basic as a shelf to put your products on whilst in the shower. The bed was OK, not super comfortable, and the pillows pretty flat.

Water in the room was £3.95 a bottle and you have to pay for wi-fi access.

Breakfast was OK but again not as I would have hoped for in a 5 star establishment - both mornings we had to ask staff to leave our plates in front of us as we hadn't finished eating!! There was no milk in the container one morning so I politely asked for some to be brought out and the staff member didn't even acknowledge me. A little training by management would go a long way.

The pool/spa/sauna was fantastic and really enjoyed it

We asked at reception for directions to one of the most popular sites in the area and they didn't have a map albeit they tried to direct us, but not being from the area we really would have preferred a map.

On balance a good hotel in a good location but don't expect anything out of the ordinary in terms of comfort or service.
